Neck -vs- Bridge models???

Neck -VS- Bridge?

Some of the Duncan pick-ups are made special for the neck or bridge position.
For example the Duncan Distortion.

Are these simply mechanical differences (string/pole spacing), or do they sound different? Are they wound different?

What if I put a DD-Bridge position pickup in the the neck position? How different would that be from a DD-Neck position pickup in the neck position?

See what I'm getting at?

I just realized I put a recommended bridge position pickup in the neck position. Thats not what I wanted to do - I guess I bought the wrong one.?.

Re: Neck -vs- Bridge models???

It's just the output for the most part. The bridge position isn't as loud as the neck position, all things being equal. So having a bridge position pickup louder than it's neck position counterpart, makes it easier to balance the volumes from position to position. Sometimes, the neck version will be a smig brighter and cleaner as well. These properties are usually obtained by using less coil windings on the neck version, and a little more windings on the bridge version.

It's fine to use pickups designated for the bridge posion in the neck position, as long as it doesn't over power the other pickup being used in the bridge position, or become muddy, or boomy, in the neck position.

Sometimes a bridge position pickup will have slightly wider pole spacing too.

Re: Neck -vs- Bridge models???

Zhang/Lew gave me the skinny on this. Once upon a time all pups were created equal...and then Seymour realized that the same pup was louder in the neck. so he made them a little less hot, to balance with the bridge pup.

Something like that...

I'm currenlt using a vintage P90 bridge in a neck slot and a custom p90 neck in the bridge, and they pair great!
