Need a bridge pup for a finicky guitar

I've got a project guitar I've been working on for a few months, and I can't get a bridge tone out of it that I like. It's a carved maple top over alder (maybe swamp ash) body, HSH configuration and hardtail, with a maple/rosewood neck. It's mostly for rock/hard rock/blues.

I first got a set of "Mo Joe/PAF Joe" pups for a b-day present and tossed them in. The PAF Joe in the neck isn't bad, but the Mo Joe in the bridge was way too brittle and harsh. Even with mild gain, there is an annoying "breakup" or clipping to the sound, rather than smoothness. It happens on different amps, at different volumes, etc...so I know it's a function of the pickup and how it acts in this guitar.

I yanked the Mo Joe and replaced it with a PAF Pro I had laying around. Much better, but it still sounds a little harsh and brittle to me. I was able to tame it a bit with a strategically placed resistor and cap, but it's still not quite right.

So.... I need some recommendations on where to go from here. I'm looking for something with punch, but most importantly a nice smooth sustain when run at low to medium gain. I'll also use it at higher gain, something like a cranked Marshal with a lead boost.... but not "dual rectifier with a metal distortion pedal" levels of gain. I don't care about high output... I want TONE. I'm looking for a "buttery crunch"... not a "raspy scream". :D

FWIW, I have a "Lil' 59" in the bridge of my "Tele" and it sounds fantastic when A/B'd with the problem child guitar. Nice and tight crunch, but buttery-smooth sustain. If it's big brother would sound like that in this guitar, that would be a leading candidate. I also like the tone of the PG on several videos I've seen, but from what I gather it's hit or miss and needs the right guitar to sound smooth. Given my history with this one, I'm not willing to bet on that happening.

One other thought is a Dimarzio Super Distortion. I used to play a ton of them way back in the day, and I seem to remember them being very smooth and tight... but it's been several years since I had one. I would probably prefer something that cleans up a little better with the volume knob though, now that I think about it.

Other than that, I'm clueless. Been too long since I've experimented and swapped around pups. :)

I put a VINTAGE BLUES SET from SD. They are 2 SH-59 calibrated for neck and bridge. I had the same problem on my les paul, and now it just sounds great. I also rewired it in 50's style with 0.047 uF caps, and just love it.

IMHO you should give it a try! ;)

Ash/Alder with Maple Top sounds like awesome JB territory! ;) I would say the perfect bridge pickup for "I'm looking for something with punch, but most importantly a nice smooth sustain when run at low to medium gain" is a Screamin Demon!

Re: Need a bridge pup for a finicky guitar

Has anyone installed a Pearly Gates and had it sound harsh and or brittle, or was it smooth and warm?

Anyone have experience with both it and a PAF Pro in the bridge of the same guitar?

I'd go more on the Custom Custom side. Smooth, buttery and sounds amazing in alder. It will round off spiky highs and has high enough output to kick the amp a little for heavy blues and hard rock. It is my favorite bridge pickup in alder.

How would you compare it to the Pearly Gates?

Thanks for the tip.

Re: Need a bridge pup for a finicky guitar

Ok. You guys have me leaning towards the Custom Custom rather than the PG. ;)

Re: Need a bridge pup for a finicky guitar

The Custom Custom is more mid focused, with softer highs than the PG. If you are describing the tone you want as 'buttery', that is the CC. The PG is more like a hotter PAF-type with some extra high end. Not nearly the mids that the CC has.

Re: Need a bridge pup for a finicky guitar

I'm thinking about swapping out the magnet in the PAF Pro for an Alnico 2, just for giggles. I like the basic tone I have now, if I could just round off the highs a bit and smooth it just a little. A magnet swap might do it.

Next question.... where can I find an Alnico 2 magnet for cheap? The only pickups I have laying around all have 5's in them, other than an Alnico II Pro neck HB from my Steinberger...and I'm not taking that one apart. :)

Now that I think about it, I wonder how the Mo Joe would sound with an Alnico 2 mag?

EDIT:

Found these. Has anyone used them?

Just for fun, I put an Alnico II Pro neck pickup in the bridge...and it actually sounds pretty good. And, the output isn't as low as I expected; certainly hot enough that I can balance it with a height adjustment.

I went ahead and ordered a couple of magnets and pole pieces. I'm gonna drop an Alnico II into the PAF Pro and Mo Joe pups, and change the pole pieces to some longer fillister head screws. Might be interesting!

(Custom Custom is still in the plans when funds allow it...but I'm a tinkerer at heart. :D)

After several hours of playing and tweaking, that "loose" shrill distortion character is still there, even with the Alnico II Pro.

Everything seems fine mechanically and electrically; no fret buzz, new switches, wiring, etc. I've tried different pots (with a couple more on the way), different strings, countless pickup adjustments, and have listened carefully to the guitar with it unplugged. I have no idea what the hell could be causing this. I don't get it.

If I could draw what I hear from the bridge pickups, it would be something like this:

My nice sounding Tele (Lil' 59):

This stubborn problem child (Mo Joe, PAF Pro, Alnico II Pro):

Lower the bridge pickup. Ignore the recommended/conventional height setting and trust your ears.

Re: Need a bridge pup for a finicky guitar

For future reference....

I finally found a pup that sounds good...actually great. It's an old Dimarzio I had in a box from the early 80's. It's unmarked, but I believe it is a Super Distortion. Replaced the wiring on it and hooked it up (pole pieces inside), and the tone is sweet. Lot's of crunch and presence, but super smooth and no more shrill break-up. It's ugly as hell, as it was originally cream and I guess I painted it black at some point and some of the paint is gone...leaving a part cream/part black mottled mess. But....I think I'll leave it; it sounds good so that's what matters.

Apparently this guitar is just really finicky and wants a very specific type of pickup. Regardless, it now makes me want to keep playing it, rather than throw it against a wall. :)

Re: Need a bridge pup for a finicky guitar

I would have suggested a Dimarzio Breed. It's pretty much made to tame guitars with bright attack.
