Need a cheap backup guitar.. Any experiences with these?

Re: Need a cheap backup guitar.. Any experiences with these?

Definitely a fan of the vintage's. They make great stuff with Wilkinson hardware... Meaning you don't really have to trade the hardware out...

Re: Need a cheap backup guitar.. Any experiences with these?

I can't be much help here, but I had/have a Vintage SG copy that's a hell of a guitar. Pickups weren't great, but it sounded awesome with a set of Duncans and it played much better than I hoped for in the price range. Cheap as hell from Ebay too.

Re: Need a cheap backup guitar.. Any experiences with these?

Left_Hand_Strat owns a modified V100 LP-alike. With a good set-up, the JHS/Vintage instruments are playable but they lack the finesse of an American guitar. Epiphone offers several price points. Hence, direct comparisons are difficult to draw without know the exact Epi model.

Squier CV series is as playable as the vintage lookalike MIM series guitars. In some cases, the Tonerider pickups in the CV series are better than the underslung ceramic bar magnet type pickups in some MIM Fenders.

Something that might be in your price range is the last of the Indonesian Hamer XT guitars. Most variants have "in-house" pickups but a few have USA Duncans or EMG-HZ. Worth seeking pre-owned.

Re: Need a cheap backup guitar.. Any experiences with these?

Thanks for the replys.. :) I like the Vintage V100s.. They look cool. Only the sharp cutaway looks iffy IMO.. But I guess I can live with that. How is their consistency?

Re Epiphone, I am talking about a good old Epiphone Les Paul Standard, or perhaps the Trad Pro i.e. a regular one with binding, trapezoid inlays etc :)

Any opinions on the ESP or BC Rich?

Re: Need a cheap backup guitar.. Any experiences with these?

I hate ESP with a passion, but as far as quality goes a real japanese ESP is head and shoulders above anything else on that list.

Please excuse me, but I have a meeting with Asmodeus to discuss the suddenly increased viability of purchasing millions of pairs of Ice skates..... :firedevil

The Classic Vibe Teles are nice. I have a Classic Vibe Tele Custom in the studio. Only changes I made were replacing the saddles with heavier brass saddles and replacing the input jack cup with a better one. All the parts came from Stew MAc and cost less than $40 total

That Mirage looks great man. Congrats (if its yours)

I like the classic vibe series. good "back up" guitar.

I am considering getting it.. Is it a Mirage? Thought it was an M1? I know practically nothing about these 80s ESPs

Re: Need a cheap backup guitar.. Any experiences with these?

Vintage V100 Les Paul copy - how do these compare to Epiphone LP Standards? NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster - Cool
LTD TE-212 Telecaster - OK
Vintage V52 Telecaster - n/a
used B.C. Rich Platinum Pro Bich - NOOOOOOOOOOOO (unless it's a killer metal band)
used ESP M1 Deluxe (Old 80s bolt on HSS with weird ESP tremolo on it, proper Strat body with banana headstock) - Cool

Iirc, that's a Sinclair on the M-I. Hard to find alot of parts and I don't remember what unit fits the route.

*and it looks top mounted, so if the stud spacing matches something else.....*

I just bought a Vintage Modified Telecaster (very similar to the Classic Vibe) for $90 at a pawn shop and I love it. The stock pickups are Duncan Designeds and they sound pretty darn good, the action needed tweaking (but that might hanging in a pawn shop, with only three strings, for about 10 months), but once set it plays very nicely.

I recently bought a brand new AXL Badwater 1216 Jr. for $180 out the door... First electric I ever bought I haven't consider swapping any parts out on. Even the stock P-90 kicks @ss!

These are really hard to find used even though they've been out a few years. I suspect its because they are actually really nice guitars that sound good, look good, play good, and save you a lot of money. No one wants to let theirs go. Its won several awards from either Premier Guitar or Guitar World (can't remember). But these are much better than any other single cut at that price point... I'd compare it to the Epi LP Pro's or the PRS SE's as far as fretwork and quality... Its a faded/thin finish, but don't let it fool you... Its a fab guitar!

Re: Need a cheap backup guitar.. Any experiences with these?

you got my vote for Classic Vibe tele... I have the CV Tele Custom and it plays and sounds more like a old tele than some old teles I tried in the shop when I bought it ! It actually floored me how good it is compared to American modern teles and vintage 60s and 70s teles

Re: Need a cheap backup guitar.. Any experiences with these?

Thanks for all the suggestions, however I cant pickup a backup right now. Had to pick up a new amp, as the one I borrowed died. Sh1t happens. Will keep my eyes out for a used CV Tele. Even if I have sworn to never play teles. Maybe I should trick it out with buckers and a floyd - Mick Mars style :D

Great guitars and if you want humbuckers and don't mind modding then you got a great quality tele body and neck and the tuners are great too!

Re: Need a cheap backup guitar.. Any experiences with these?

I've got a Vintage V6 icon.

I replaced the neck for mostly aesthetic reasons (also got a tusq nut though). The pickups sound very nice IMO. They are bright as hell strat pickups, which makes for fantastic jangly clean tones with my Laney VC30
