Need a higher gain overdrive pedal (MXR sized)

Re: Need a higher gain overdrive pedal (MXR sized)

I use a BOSS Mega-Distortion for my heavier stuff. Lots of bottom and chug

TC Electronic Dark Matter is another one worth checking out, it's more of a distortion (as is the MXR 78), but it sounds like that's what you want if you need it to be your main tone.

Now THIS has me very interested because I am doing a retrowave album next and this looks like it screams 80s. I am using a BOSS RV-3 (technically 1990/91) specifically for the BOSS flavour of delay and the sound of the buffer.

Another one to check out is the (discontinued) Dirty Deed. It pretty much starts where most overdrives end, and gets into fuzz territory as well. Really a great pedal that sounds more like an amp to me than a pedal throughout most of the drive range.

Ooo, thanks for the recco. How sensitive is the gain control? I need something between medium and high gain.

I didn’t realize it was discontinued.

Re: Need a higher gain overdrive pedal (MXR sized)

The gain control is sensitive, but the range is from what I'd consider an overdrive on max to super saturated. So you have all the graduations in between. It certainly isn't an overdrive pedal at all. As far as it being discontinued, I just looked...it is still in the current pedal list, although at the end.

Re: Need a higher gain overdrive pedal (MXR sized)

Despite the cartoonish name, I can heartily recommend a MXR Super Badass Distortion. Just be careful with the bass knob not to overpower you bass player :)...

Know nothing about this pedal, will check it out. I have been very impressed with the limited exposure I have had to their stuff thus far.

The Mojo Mojo is cool, but not sure if it will have enough gain if the BB doesn't, that's why I recommended the Dark Matter version. FWIW, the MM is Paul Gilbert's go-to OD.

Re: Need a higher gain overdrive pedal (MXR sized)

Replaced the BB Preamp with the distortion+ for tonight’s rehearsal. Not sure how it will sound, to be honest, as I have always got the best results from a Marshall style amp already breaking up and for tonight I am using my Champ clone head into a 4x12.

Re: Need a higher gain overdrive pedal (MXR sized)

Last night’s experiment was definitely a step in the right direction! Losing a dedicated clean loop meant matching the volume with and without the distortion+ and keeping the modulation on at all times, but it sounded very promising! The overall sound I am going for is like Trevor Rabin’s tone in the early 80s.

Signal chain was:
Guitar > TC Ditto > distortion+ > TC Mimiq > BOSS PS-5 > Mooer chorus > BOSS RV-3

Guitar was a Strat with HS-3 in the bridge.

Will post a sound clip later, but I am thinking that the Custom Badass, MD-2,or Friedman are what I am looking for.

Wampler Pinnacle is a great pedal, Marshall/Van Halen in a box.

If you like the Distortion+, would you be interested in trying a DOD Gunslinger? I bought it last week on an impulse for $30 brand new. It sounds fine but it does not do anything my other boxes don't do. I was hoping to trade it for a cheap delay pedal but I'd be happy to sell it for $25 including shipping. Or if you want to pay shipping I will just send it to you to try out. If you like it you can buy it for $20 and if you don't like it you can just send it back.

Re: Need a higher gain overdrive pedal (MXR sized)

I was after the same thing a while back, having come to love my BB but wishing I could get more gain out of it for those fat, singing leads. I saw people mentioning the TC Electronic Dark Matter as a great and oft-overlooked pedal for the exact same uses I had in mind. I was skeptical, because of the way it looked (I assumed more modern, chugga-chugga type sounds, which I really don't want). Turns out I'm not alone, the guys at TC Electronic even mention it, and I'm starting to suspect that the design has a lot to do with its popularity; it would appeal to any lover of classic hard rock, from Gary Moore to John Norum, etc.

So I thought I might as well give it a try, since it doesn't cost much even brand new these days. Better make the wrong call with a cheap pedal than a pricey Wampler or JHS. (I had looked at both the Pinnacle and the Angry Charlie, but couldn't find either used)

The Dark Matter arrived, and it immediately put a big smile on my face. I tried it alongside the BB (the one with the mid-boost knob), and I could get them to sound extremely similar. But the DM can go further when you crank that gain knob, and hoo boy, those are some fat, crunchy sounds. The EQ knobs are super musical, too, even with the treble on full, it didn't sound harsh.

Give it a try, you might like it. I'm using it through a Laney L5 head, with Strat-style guitars, SSS pups. The BB now handles the medium gain, general drive tones, and the Dark Matter is there for when I need that little extra.

Oh, and like Dave here mentioned, the Super Badass Distortion is really, really good. I almost got that one instead of the BB, having tried it at the store and loved it. But when I got home, it sounded awful, real cheap and fizzy. Turns out my speaker didn't take kindly to most distortion pedals, so I bought and sold many potential gems, including that MXR. Killer pedal, I've seen tons of great feedback, praising its versatility.
