Need a middle to go with Black Winter

I need to get a middle single coil pickup to go with the Black Winter pickups that I purchased and suggestions? Also should I get a single coil RWRP or can I get away with out this type?

Welcome to the forum!

I have to ask...what do you want from a middle pickup? Are you looking for a quacky Strat sound, or is volume balance more important to you? If I had Black Winters, I'd go for a hum-cancelling middle pickup.

If volume balance is important to you, you're going to want to seek out the hottest single coil form factor pickup ever.. If you're going to split the BWs to use with the middle, then your options will open up.

Maybe even an RWRP SSL-5 that you could wire with the BW's split in positions 2&4.

The hardest thing about questions like this is that we don't know the issues that a new pickup might solve.

Are you wiring it to a regular 5-way or a proprietary/custom switch with splitting options (most often found on Ibanez HSH guitars)?

Short answer: Try the STK-S7 or the STK-S6 / SSL-6. If you live in USA then try one and if it does not work for you you can claim the 21 days change policy and get a different one.

Long answer:

I have never tried those humbuckers but in my little experience with HSH if you really need volume balance but also want to avoid common complain that middle pickup is in the way of your playing then I would not use a vintage output one like the SSL-1 or SSL-2, because quite pickups need to be closer to strings to better match volume of humbuckers. If the humbuckers are very hot there is a chance the vintage single coil will never match the output. I would rather choose a higher output single coil with flat poles like Parallel Axis Stacked single coil, STK-S7, STK-S6 or SSL-6. I have not used the Parallel axis or STK-S7 but in demos they sounds a bit closer to vintage as opposed to STK-S6 and SSL-6 which I have used and are more muscular, less chime than SSL-1 (vintage staggered) but still good sounding imho, just a different vibe.

Pixie Lix demonstrated an HSH guitar with JB/STK-S6/Jazz Around 6:00 he goes thru every position with clean sounds.

I tried but could not find a demo with Parallel Axis single coil or STK-S7 in the middle of an HSH but I would keep it in the radar, actually maybe I would try STK-S7 first, I just have not used it myself.

There are other high output single coils from Duncan like quarter pound or STK-S9 or SSL-3, I have never tried them but at least based on sound clips those would not be my first choice for HSH but what do I know.
