Need a new distortion pedal...

Anyone have any suggestions? I need something that will do dark sounding rhythm work (see Tool), along with some nice sounding lead work (see Iron Maiden). I know nothing will nail it.. but i need something that can do that well. I'm running it thorugh the clean channel of my mesa rectoverb. I'm using a pedal because i'm never satisfied using just the dirty channel, i think a good distortion pedal and the clean channel sounds much better. I'm using mainly a PRS CE22 and a Fender MIM strat through it. I'm not setting price limits.. just tell me what is good... if there are 2 pedals that nail those styles well, list both! thanks guys

I dunno about both styles, but I know alot of people love a DS-1 or BD-2 through there rectoverb, head set to slight crunch, pedals set to balls out gain when engaged.

Dark sounding? Big Muff. It's no good if you want tight rhythm and muting though.

Tech21 SansAmp set to Boogie mode.

If you want darker, try swapping your stock Mesa tubes for a set of JJ/Telsa tubes. When you order new tubes, make sure they're still biased a touch cold.
