Need a PA Guru

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
Working on really tweaking out the PA sound. Beyond the manual, and band experimentation, little idea what is going on.

Here is the situation:

I have 4 Aux channels that I'm using for Monitors. PERFECT! Lead vocalist mix, guitar left/right mixes (so we can hear each other), and a Drummer mix (So he can hear lead vocal, his vocal, and guitars).

Also - there is a cool Digital Fx processor on board, which has a killer Drum setting.

HOWEVER...The 4th Aux Channel is also the FX mix for each channel! What I want to do is use the 4th Aux channel for a "drummer" custom monitor mix, but I also want to put the drum fx on ONLY the drums.

If I turn up the volume on the various channels to make the mix for the drummer, it also adds FX to the output.?!?!?!?!?! I only want FX on the drums. The drummer does not need to hear those (because...right there).

AHHHH! Suggestions?

Give us the model of the mixer and a pic of the layout.

Get the FX for the drums another way. What FX are you using? Ex...snare verb?

Also you could free up 2 sends by putting a small guitar cab on each side of the stage to monitor things. Could be a second cab driven by the amp or better yet a small PA cab run from a DI from the amp. Are you using closed backed cabs? Open backs bleed more and can feed more to the other side of the stage.

Or you need more mixer.

Don’t know about drum/FX bus issues, but one question : do you really need separate guitar L/R? Or would Guitars Combined be OK? That’d give you a spare bus to work with.

Re: Need a PA Guru

On my Peavey FX16 mixer I have six AUX SENDS. Four are PRE-FADER, POST EQ; two are POST-FADER.

PRE-FADER sends are typically used for MONITORS. POST-FADER sends are used for adding EFX.

On a big concert stage, mics are send to a splitter snake, and the monitor sends go to the off-stage monitor mixer, feeding eight or more separate monitor mixes, amps, stage wedges, side fills, or wireless in-ear monitor systems. The other half of the split goes via snake to the FOH mixer.

On some consoles, the PRE-FADER AUX sends are not only PRE-FADER but PRE-EQ as well. But many newer semi-pro consoles use PRE-FADER AUX sends that are POST-EQ. So...any changes to the EQ will not only affect the FOH mix, but also the PRE-FADER AUX sends to the MONITORS. Sometimes it simplifies things, and sometimes it wrecks havoc.

I'd like to see specs on your mixer. Those with four sends are usually configured with two PRE-FADER and two POST-FADER (EFX). Sometimes one of those EFX sends are dedicated for internal effects and the other for outboard reverbs, delays, harmonizers, etc. This would be ideal for adding efx only to the drummers mix in the FOH. If you want the drummer's efx to show up ONLY in the drummer's monitor, then I would add an outboard efx unit in-between the drummer's PRE-FADER AUX SEND and his power amp/speakers.

From here, need more info.

Re: Need a PA Guru

you may not be able to do what you want. on my board i have six aux sends, i can use one or two of them for the build in fx but then i lose the ability to use them as aux sends. the make and model of your mixer will help a lot

Yamaha MG20XU

And yeah Jeremy...I think that's my deal. If I turn FX OFF, then Aux 4 works just like the other 3. If I use the internal FX, then I get FX out to house, and the drummer loses the mix on various channels.

Drummer wants to hear un-effected vocals and keyboards. I want the drum FX out to house. Can't do both! I don't think....

Re: Need a PA Guru

Do the FX get assigned to the 4 sub groups? If not you might rig a mix to the drummer using the subs.

Re: Need a PA Guru

It's about giving the drummer the mix he wants.

I can get him sound other ways (Monitor out with house mix, Sub group out with channels on/off at relative channel vols)

Re: Need a PA Guru

Ummm - saw the drummers REAL kit last night. This is a non-issue now. He does really need a good vocal mix, because he is harmony singer #1.
