i just put an Anderson H3 in my esp Horizon(fairly bright guitar) and it thickened it up BIG TIME! still loads of clarity and punch.

You didn't mention which string gauge you use, but 11's do a great job of fattening your tone. And don't use low action.

Try a Blackouts Modular Preamp? Really thickens & darkens your sound, while still keeping things tight & not over-compressed..

Makes a big difference without much of an investment.

#1. The Custom is too scooped. I had one for a two-guitar band and you couldn't hear me either. That pickup lasted one practice. Get a Duncan Distortion, JB, or DMZ Super Distortion. You will be heard.

#2. Cut = uppermids. Fix your E.Q. and amp settings to boost 2-4 KHz.

#3. Agreed, if you have Celestion G12T-75s get rid of them for a speaker that actually has mids.

PATB-2 Parallel Axis Distortion is amazing for growling thick low end. Incredibly hot, very compressed with most amps. One of my favorite metal pickups, a monster for lead, rhythm and riffs [Usually you have to give up something in one of those areas for another].

But it does sound like you may want to attack speaker (maybe cabinet, too) and EQ before fiddling with pickups. Custom 8 not having enough bass/mids sounds improbable.

You playing his guitar into your rig, and yours into his are great ideas for figuring out what is going on.

Yeh!

My first thought when I began reading this thread was different speakers. If you are running through a 4x12 with G12T-75's, take out two and replace them with two H30's to thicken up your tone. Speakers have a greater impact on tone than pups. If you have a pup capable of strong lows and mids, but your speaker can only produce upper mids and highs, you are never going to get a thicker sound until you get some speakers that can produce those tones in abundance.

Yeah I can hear myself fine, it's people in the audience. A couple of people have said they can hear me in sound check but not when we're playing the gig.
I thought it might be because of too much treble, so it cuts but there's not enough power behind the sound??

I recon from what you are saying your rig is fine, if it's you cut in the soundcheck but not the gig i'd say it's the soundman. Not enough soundmen take a note of there settings per band & think one setting does all bands.

I agree, i've used all those pickups & never had a cutting problem.
