Need advanced opinion.

Re: Need advanced opinion.

I understand wanting a new guitar; whatever keeps you inspired. Especially at thirteen, nothing would keep my interest up like a shiny new guitar to practice on. Otherwise I would have been on the streets/doing drugs/disobeying my auntie or some combination of those etc.

Re: Need advanced opinion.

Ace 2600 , if an Amp isn't the issue for U - I like post #12 ( Teles are underrated in versatility ) U could do ok with a 10buck chinese Rails pup if U had to

Re: Need advanced opinion.

Yeah. Squiers are legit tho! It's the same wood. Alder or basswood, maple and rosewood. The same classic shape and design. Once you put some pickups and work into them, you're looking at pretty minuscule differences between it and higher tier guitars. I'd be really interested to know which components of an upgraded Squier are going to totally wreck an amateur's sound.

Re: Need advanced opinion.

About Squiers: Affinity and similar priced are cheap guitars, and they feel like they are. Better than most you can get with same price, but not something I would recommend. Vintage Modified get a lot of praise for price/quality, but they have basswood body, and appparently pretty bad bridge. Classic Vibe would be comparable to MiM Fenders if not better, but pricey.

But I would also recommend you to save your money for good amp. If you don't already have. I wish I had back then... There isn't really a "cheap but good" amps out there.

Re: Need advanced opinion.

I think each part of Affinities are sound. Aside from customizing the electronics, there isn't a component to them which prevents achieving quality sound. Not saying it isn't likely to improve things by getting a higher priced guitar. But an Affinity with Duncans has very good sound.

+1 Get all you can out of your current guitar, and save all of your pennies until such time as you can swing something that's a serious step up from a beginner/low price-type instrument. At that point, you will have a much better idea of what it is you want/need. If you are passionate about it, work hard, and stick with it, believe me that at some point you will end up with an amount of gear that would surprise you today.

Spoken as another guitar player who grew up in Michigan and had a Les Paul as his first electric guitar.

At your age I now wish I'd spent less in guitars and more in a badass amp.

What amp/pedals are you playing through?
I agree with these Gentlemen. I also had a 96 Epi as my first "real" guitar. My next purchase was a bunch of boss pedals and a used Deluxe Strat Plus then added Duncans.

For me, the stock Epi pickups were trash, upgrading to Duncans was huge. After that, if I could have done it all over I wouldn't have bought any pedals or more guitars until I bought a new tube amp. I should have bought a Blues Jr... The positive is I had some awesome guitars and pedals ready for when I bought my Mesa down the road, but that was much later.

Im not very Much looking for an amp, I Own a 60 watt Crate amp, and I run my Epi through a zoom Gx1on Multi effects pedal. Im just looking to expand a little bit, I looked into changing the Pups to P-90s, Im a little bit daunted by the sauntering and that stuff though. I don't want to ruin it, It is my first guitar, I think you all understand.

Re: Need advanced opinion.

Sure man. Just curious, what Epi Les Paul is it?
Special II? LP100? Standard?

Try and snatch a used Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster. Those things are killer.

Re: Need advanced opinion.

I got a used CV from guitar center in mint condition. I own American and MIMS. The Squire beats all in quality, and it sounds fantastic.

Its a 96 Les Paul Standard Plustop, Guy i got it from bundled it with a Crate gx60 Amp, cable, case, and strap, 350 bucks, I thought it was a steal, Ill try to post pics later. Some Idiot "Weathered" it. It looks pretty messed up. Needs a setup though.

Re: Need advanced opinion.

What's your motivation to get a new guitar?

Not to long ago I was in your place, except I went from a squire affinity to a epiphone Les paul. I mostly wanted a different vibe though.

Now I use my Epiphone and my new Hamer 99% of the time. My strat (which is upgraded now) still sits on the rack too much.

If it's sound quality/improved tone, I would suggest looking at amps and possibly new pickups rather than an entirely new guitar.

If you are really just wanting a mustang or Tele, then get a classic vibe or vintage modified at around this price point. The Les Paul can't get those tones easily, so if that's what you want to add...get one.

Yes, it is possible to tweak up Affinity into great player. They just need notable amount of work (none of the Affinities I've tried have been particularly inspiring as they are), which is why I wouldn't recommend them to anyone else. (but might buy for myself, if happen to come across a cheap one)

You have to teach yourself soldering to swap pickups eventually. Aside from the difficulty of soldering itself, basic guitar wiring is no more complex than wiring up a tv, sound system, and video games, which I did when I was 8. Paying a tech 50- $100 each time you want to make a little change isn't really an option. Neither is always paying the amount of money necessary to get a guitar that comes stock with pups of equal quality to Duncans. You can't wreck the guitar. At worst you'll ruin a $5 pot or $12 switch.

Re: Need advanced opinion.

I always want a new guitar
I have them all over my walls
its never enough

STOP the Madness

get your Epi professionally set up
get new pickups
learn a new style
any thing but nay new gear shall pass

its a slippery slope you tread here, son
Epiphones are gateway gear

Re: Need advanced opinion.

Me? Don't get me wrong. When I say cheap, I mean one that costs under 200€ :D

I don't blame ya. Cheap guitars or guitars that exude cheap feel regardless of the quality feel cheap. Before I had my hi-end Ibanez Prestige I was assured that the low end RGs had done it for me but then I discovered the luxury feel I get playing the expensive Prestige that I can't get from the cheap one, even though that cheapo is actually better in terms of feel, with the neck being not thin and the absence of the anxiety from trying not to bumpt it against the wall.
