Need advice for beginner lead guitarist

I have been playing for about 3 years and id like to get into guitar improvisation. I am comfortable with the Pentatonic scale, but I have always been confused with where to go next? I like playing blues music, but id like to get into more metal soloing(I love marty Friedmans solos).I'm really motivated to be a great lead guitarist. If someone could maybe list some scales to learn or post GOOD video lessons I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Modes of the major scale are a must; Friedman ventures into more exotic and hybrid scales, but that can wait. You should know your chord progressions and should know which scale would do the thing you're hearing in your head... this part is quite tricky, IMO. You gotta be either smart or resilient here. Also, it's great if you can see patterns in and relationship between the scales/modes.

You might want to check out some of my articles on the blog here, starting with this one. It has links to all of my other ones about the modes of the major scale and how to use them for improvisation.

Learn how to play all of your major and minor scales on the on the open position on the neck (using the first three or four frets). This will help you later understand the relationships between the scales and modes. It will also make it easier for you to play over changes without jerking your hand all over the neck.

Yes, if u are playing pentatonic scale now, next step would be major scale and natural minor after that the rest the modes may follow. Remember take your time to develop a feel to what u play, it is not about how many or how exotic scales u know

These articles are a great resource.

May I also suggest picking up a metronome. Don't worry so much about playing the scales fast, make sure you are playing them clean and accurate.

Re: Need advice for beginner lead guitarist

I've been playing for more than 30 years. I would say jam with songs you like, the notes that sound bad, remember what they were and don't play them over that song anymore, the notes that sounded good, remember what they were and use them more over that song to make interesting mini-melodies, phrases. If you can't tell what's good or bad while you are playing, try recording yourself jamming and listen to it right after while you can remember what notes you played and identify the good from the bad.

After a while of this, you'll have a vocabulary of patterns of notes and phrases that have your unique identity and make you stand out as a lead guitar player. Along the way you'll also happen upon how to play licks and riffs you've heard that you like and can integrate them into your playing also. In the end, you'll sound like you and not something you read in a book. Books are fine too. You'll only remember the parts that fit you anyway. I just mean you don't want your playing to sound like student exercises.

By the time you are developed as a player, Friedman and anyone else you look up to will not be the leaders in guitar playing, you will. You need to take your influences and look to the future, develop new styles and become the next Friedman - but you'll have to do it being you, doing something a little different.

What I wrote might sound juvenile and simplistic, and unexpected, but the net net is use your ears more than what's on paper.

The best device for improvisation is a looper. Scales by themselves are no more than finger patterns- you have to hear how the notes sound over chords. Learn the chords that go with each scale- write a chord progression, loop it, and solo for hours.

Apart from all the really good advice in here...I'd 'd also suggest paying heed to accents/embellishments..develop your phrasing/slides/bends..learn to mute properly & mostly develop your vibrato...a good vibrato & bending to pitch ..or pleasingly, will make a huge difference to the way your solo sounds..
