Need advice on Extension cabinet

i am thinking about getting an extension cabinet for my vox pahtfinder 15r. these are really good sounding little amps that get very loud. however, the open back 8" cabinet is its shortcoming.

i want a 1x12 closed back cab. i play country, classic rock, and i like a good clean sound as well.

what do you guys recommend?

Re: Need advice on Extension cabinet

For a single 12 I'd recommend an open back cab. A sealed single 12 cab might be to small and choke the life out of a speaker. Think of the air sealed inside the cabinet as being a spring. The smaller the area inside the cab is, the tighter that spring behind the speaker is going to be and the more it's going to restrict the movement of the speaker.

There are smallish cabs with a tuned port...not my style though. And since the port is tuned with a specific speaker in mind, you can't really experiment with different speakers.

Avatar has 1x12 cabs for about $250. I have an Avatar 2x12, and I have actually tried my old 15w solid state Crate through this cab. I didn't buy it for this purpose, but it does sound cool. I like the solid state distortion sound, and I like big speakers, so it is fun to mess around with.

If you're going to get an extension cab, I'd go for at least a 2x12. I use a Lopoline 2x12 vintage cab, and love it. I've never cared for the sound of speakers in 1x12 combo amps, because of the tendency to sound boxy, and the 2x12 completely resolved that problem.
