Need advice: semi-hollow without laminate!

Re: Need advice: semi-hollow without laminate!

Gibson 335s sound good. But to my ears a side by side comparison with a PRS hollowbody favors the PRS by a world. So I assume its due to the difference between solid and laminates.

I've also played both side-by-side and thought the PRS sounded like crap, but to each their own. They have very different electronics, different scale length, different body size, and different construction (a 335 has a center block, while a PRS only has a post under the bridge). The tone difference is much more likely the result of one of these other design considerations.

Laminated sides and back are structurally better
The top should be solid bit if you get a flame, quilt, or burl then that's gonna be a Laminated ply on top

Won't hurt
Just that's why you don't see those type tops on acoustics

A semi hollow is kinda between

Laminates don't affect the magnetic pickups at all

And would have little to do with the amplified tone

My Semi-Hollow is solid woods–mahogany and spruce. I would say it has a much fuller tone than my solid body strat and it sounds better on the 2 and 4 positions. I guess I was thinking that the solid wood was better than laminate...never thought of this.

Is that semi hollow or chambered
Sweet looking

Most jazz boxes and acoustics have laminated back and sides

What's it called when a figured top is glued over a mahogany body

Thanks! Turned out really nicely!

It is a semi-hollow–the pickups are set in Mahogany but its hollow everywhere else. Sounds awesome unplugged and I am trying to figure out a piezo system for it...I'm picky about my colors matching and can only find a piezo strat bridge in chrome.
