Need all suggestion for playing at home, $400 or less

I am trying to help a cousin of mine find a good budget amp. He is disabled and just plays at home. He like to play a lot of different styles so I figure a modeler will be best. His only requirement are it has a 12" speaker.
I don't have a lot of experience with amps like that. so I figured I would ask you guys. His budget is around $400.

I'd say one of the Joyo Bantamp line (mini versions of famous amps) and a Fender SC112 cab. The impedance of the cab will work with the amp.

Its a bit more but egnater tweaker 112 combo? either that or a boss katana

I'll check those 3 out. I'm trying to think of something that will cover what he wants to do without having to buy pedals. I wondered about one of the vox vt100x amps. I had one a few years ago and remembering it covered a lot of ground.
The diezel and orange models sounded pretty good. I would just help him pickup a good pedal platform. But with his wheelchair he doesn't need any clutter in the floor.

The Fender Mustang line might be a good choice then. He can control the effects and controls with a phone or tablet.

katana has a companion app that throws virtual effects into the amp. theres also a footswitch you can buy. Pretty much just comes down to whether he wants tube or solid state. katana and tweaker are both super versatile

Re: Need all suggestion for playing at home, $400 or less

If he had his way he would go tube. But he's into orange half stacks, diezel, Friedman things along those lines. He's tried some of the amps I've had and we've took him to a few shops.
I know he won't get those tones on his budget. But we just want to give him something he enjoys.
So he won't give up. He keeps getting more depressed and doesn't have much to do.

Get either the Boss Katana 50 or Katana 100. If he is just at home the 50 would be fine.. Both have a 12" speaker.

The 100 has a few more features but the 50 is a great amp for like 200$ and don't let the low price scare you off. they rock..

Id definitely go tweaker. Its all tube but it has so many switching options, you can get some really interesting in between tones. Only downside is i dont think it has built in effects, but a zoom g3 or g5 solves that problem

Peavey VIP2
40 watts, 12 inch speaker
Tons of models and effects
Can be had used between $100-150

I pulled mine out of the closet
And have moved my Cube 30 to the back of the house

It moves air in a most delightful way

Don't get hung up on tubes. There are plenty of SS amps out there sound just as good as any tube amp. Both platforms have great and horrible examples. Focus on the tone and the budget.

There is the issue of response to different pickups, technique, picks, pedals (overdrives, distortion, fuzz, etc) though. Even kempers dont respond to a tubescreamer like a tube amp would

while im a total tube amp snob for the most part, if i was looking for something for home use, id get a modeler. id probably look for an old vox like joe used to have

Re: Need all suggestion for playing at home, $400 or less

Thanks for the suggestions guys. We are planning on taking him to a few shops this weekend to let him try a few things out. Hopefully he can find something.

Yes tube and SS respond differently to a lot of variables. It doesn't make one better or worse than the other. It is the player's preference. A lot of iconic guitarists used solid state amps.

I have to say, I dig the VIP series. There is a good PC editor, too. I use the VIP 1 in my teaching studio.
