slash is a hard one, IMO.
for such an easy-going persona, he's certainly shrouded his gear with mystery
modern slash is running the pickup volumes (overly) low, and stage volume
AFD is all about that effing amp
illusions is A2P>LP>wah>marshall at headache-inducing volume
this isn't gospel, but it should help get you started.

I don't particularly like his post-AFD sound*, Slash using V30s now doesn't have anything to do with the tones I liked from him.
Speaker choice does depend on the cabinet and amp, in an amp that needs that particular midrange spike without excess treble, the V30 is one of a kind. There are plenty of speakers that are similar except for taming that spike, though, and I'd tend to use any of those instead, for most things.

I don't know. I like V30's for just about everything now. My ears and everything else are getting normalized to them.

For many 70's rock tones or sludge metal, I'd go with a G12H30 (-75 or -55 depending on amp & tone desired. I actually like some of the clones better than Celestion's current offering). G12M25 or one of the "broken-in" sounding competitors for other classic Marshall tones.
For tigher shred tones, EVM-12L is just awesome. Celestion Blue (and cheaper, mostly smoother and slightly less chimey, clones) are amazing in lower output amps. And that's just a few of the classic (mostly) British speakers covered...
I don't get the V30 in everything so many amp manufacturers are still doing. I guess it's cheaper than matching the speaker to the amp, and it guarantees any head will work with any common 4x12. I like variety in pickups for tone. A5 and ceramic don't cover everything. Neither does the V30.
All that said... The V30 is pretty hard to beat in an oversize cab with a Dual Rectifier for just one (far from only) example of where I like it.

it's still there (on some tracks), you've just got to separate your speakers to get to it. for every track izzy did on those albums, it seems slash did at least 2. on a few tracks izzy's sound is much more like slash's (than on AFD)

Didn't sound as good, really not the same. Slash isn't playing off of it anymore, they just do their own things. And Slash has claimed he rerecorded Izzy's parts himself on a lot of it, so wouldn't be surprised if the "Izzy" parts that sound like Slash actually are. Who knows if he was exaggerating or just letting bitterness speak, but something was badly off at that point, anyways.
It's a shame bands with such amazing chemistry don't always survive. Appetite For Destruction was just so amazing. Classic yet modern, brought together so many different old elements without getting lost in nostalgia.

You know though I think people are getting way too hung up on it HAS to be this it HAS to be that. I'm sure that he can get within the ballpark using a 24.75 scale lespaul esque guitar and a decent marshall.
To the OP relax, tone chasing is half the fun. Work with what you got figure out what its missing and set your future purchase priorities based on that. If you have a modeling amp i suggest picking your amp patch with your ears not the label. Ive heard many labeled as being "british" that sound nothing even vaugely close to a marshall. The last modeler I messed with I felt that the AC30 patch gave the best early marshall tone. Just something to consider.
All that being said though. I think that Slash could plug a squire tele into a peavey bandit and wind up still sounding like Slash.

Anyone know what he is using on his tours now? Saw him on friday and the Jubilees were there but non of them were plugged in and I was close up and it didn't sound like he had any loud amp on stage (all the sound was coming from the PA) also all but 2 cabs had tape over the Marshall logo??

This technique was mainly used for the feedback sections of You Could be Mine. Once the Boogie (MKIII I think, as that fed back the easiest) started to feedback that tone also came through his mic'd amp in another room. It also could have been used for Estranged and similar songs.

Next time you're at the local store, try messing around with the new Boss Powerstack pedal. Might find a tone you like...

Eh, Vintage 30s are good enough for me, too
I guess the "Slash sound" on a budget consists of a high gain Marshall amp, so I think the Bugera 1990 would be a good start. That with a decent Les Paul styled guitar like an Epiphone or a good midrange priced LP copy like ESPs stuff would rock.
Listen right around the 2:45 mark. Is it exactly what Slash uses? Heck no, but it definitely gets you in the ballpark, will cut live and won't hurt your bank account too badly.
