Auto wah and Envelope filter are used interchangably, but Auto wah can also refer to the Boss style effect that basically uses an LFO to change the fiilter freqency instead of the input dynamics to change it.
In one sense, you can use a wah instead of an envelope filter, but generally you get a different type of expressive quality from a filter than a rocker wah. Also, filters also tend to have more extreme cutoffs, resonances and more adjustability than most wahs. I would recommend the Tonefactor Analog Filter as a simple one, and the range of EHX Q pedals for more options. The Digitech Synth Wah is cool for more synthy type sounds, and the latest Boss AW-3 is interesting, but I think those two aren't the best for real funky filter stuff. Also the Alesis Philtre is incredibly versatile, but it's OOP so you need to look on ebay.

I just Scored a Line 6 Otto Filter off ebay for $40 used!! It does the Autowah thing good.(i.e.) Theme from shaft and the EH Mutron Filter thing (i.e.) Jerry Garcia well. It also does a talk Box emulation. (Not spot on,But close enough for Rock N' Roll)
