Need Heavy, MID DRENCHED Pickup combination

I am currently using a JB bridge and 59n in my PRS, but i dont really like the 59n anymore.. i need a neck pickup with fast attack. I love the sound of the JB, and was thinking of a dual JB combo, but the insane amount of mids through my mesa rectoverb might kill me :laugh2: . Any suggestions? I like Tool's tone.

What don't you like about the 59n? I hated how boomy and bassy it was, and how it sounded undefined under gain. I'd suggest the Jazz if that was the problem you were having.

ya, thats the problem, but hows the jazz under high gain?

Re: Need Heavy, MID DRENCHED Pickup combination

Heh, in mohogany, It's my favorite neck pickup, and I almost always play under high gain. Very sweet and articulate, good amount of treble to cut through and sound glassy, has sort of a vintagey flavor to it, but I love it. Not too much bass, not muddy at all, and not boomy by any means. Balances perfectly with my DD, and balances perfectly with JB's as well. Clean tone is great, too.

Holy, this is slightly OT, but could you tell me what you think of the JB through the Rectoverb? I'm considering changing out the pickups in my Schecter (mahogany body, set mahogany neck) and I'm considering the Jazz in the neck but can't decide between the JB and Custom for the bridge spot. I also run through a Rectoverb so I figured you'd be a good guy to ask :).

I have a guitar with a JB and another with a Custom, and i must say, i like the JB much more. The JB has awesome highs that accent the recto's characteristsics, along with great mids to make beefy rhythm licks. The JB's cleans sound angelic witht he rectoverbs reverb too. The Custom is a bit more sterile and harsh, imo. The JB is a beautiful thing :)

Re: Need Heavy, MID DRENCHED Pickup combination

Very cool man, most have recommended the JB but the Custom was getting a lot of attention in another thread so I started having second thoughts haha. Looks like early next year I'll be swapping pickups.

Right now I have a DiMarzio Fred in the bridge and PAF Pro in the neck, the Fred is too shrill, thin, and nasally for me, while the PAF Pro sounds great for leads but gets mucked up in chords with any gain on them. Those two probably work much better in basswood ;).

Re: Need Heavy, MID DRENCHED Pickup combination

If you like Tool's tone, the jazz is perfect.

Matter of fact its the same pickup Adam Jones uses.

Want to hear it under high gain?

Listen to tool :laugh2:

Re: Need Heavy, MID DRENCHED Pickup combination

Of course, it is being run through a Diezel ;)

He (Jones) uses a JB in the bridge as well, correct?

His guitar techs have swapped out the JB's for Distortions recently.

Re: Need Heavy, MID DRENCHED Pickup combination

Well, I love the JB, it's not comin out :) Jones does use a diezel as part of his rig, he could use DIMARZIOS, and still sound good :laugh2:

Re: Need Heavy, MID DRENCHED Pickup combination

Jones uses all kinds of amps, not just the diezel...as for the pickup the Jazz used to be my fav, because it does not mud under insane amounts of gain...now y fav is a PG...I have just gotten into Alnico II pups lately, and the PG neck is one of the best!!!

Re: Need Heavy, MID DRENCHED Pickup combination

Mids Drenched? CC...through a Marshall lol.

Yeah it's a bridge pickup, but if you were thinking of putting a JB in the neck anyway, consider the CC. I mean just look at the tone chart. Mids galore!

Edit: Just noticed where you said that the JB's mids might kill you...did you mean "no mids whatsoever" by mids drenched? I thought you meant all mids. Anyway, if you did mean no mids...well, the '59 has some scooped mids anyway...but the Alnico II Pro has uh, more scoop. So for less mids, AIIP, for more mids, CC.

nah i like LOTS of mids, but i thought 2 jbs together through a mesa would be overkill

Hm, that's interesting.
By recently do you mean after Lateralus or he had them on Lateralus?

Re: Need Heavy, MID DRENCHED Pickup combination

Adam stated in Guitar Player that he *may* occasionally use the neck pickup while recording, but NEVER live. He turns the neck volume to zero, and uses the toggle for on/off. His neck pickup is probably stock, and could be a Fisher Price for all it matters :)
