NEED HELP AGAIN ON FRET PROBLEM, SORRY

Ok you guys have been a huge help to me so I will try not to bother you to much with this. I think I have it figured out but not sure. My wife and daughter got me a Charvel Desolation for Christmas and its a pretty cool guitar, but with the string height at 1.5mm I get a slight buzz but still have great sustain. well that is until I get to the 18th fret then I start to loose sustain, around the 22nd its dead, but the 24th sounds fine. I believe its that the 24th fret is high and needs to be leveled. only problem is, is there a way to actually check this? I have a fret rock but without a 25th fret I don't see how that will help me. any suggestions? by the way the construction on this guitar is neck through so there is no shimming the neck. it also has the Seymour Duncan blackouts which sound great but they are a little hot for my taste.

Well, you could shave a bit off the 24th fret to see if it affects anything. Otherwise I would suggest raising the string height a bit.

Did you get a good set-up on it before arriving at this problem?

Check the neck relief first. If there is too much relief, you buzz up high
Frets are next. Its a good idea on any new guitar just to go ahead and get the frets leveled anyways

no I usually do all my own setup work since everywhere around where I live charges so much for a setup. last time I checked the cheapest I could find was 75.00 and that included strings. I also level my own frets, since the cheapest I can find 125.00. from what I understand that is high, so I bought the tools and learned myself. as far as neck relief I have it set at 0.011". I usually try to get the relief as low as I can tends to make the guitar seem to play easier.

Ya I like mine @ .010". If it plays at the 18th and 24th, but the 22nd is dead, thats almost certainly a high fret

ok that kinda was my diagnosis as well, just wanted to see if there was a way to actually measure it. what a minute nevermind I got it. I forgot I have fret calibers sorry to bother y'all.

Re: NEED HELP AGAIN ON FRET PROBLEM, SORRY

ok yep got a high fret checked my 24th fret with my fret calibers and it measures .0435 the 23rd and 22nd and 21st measured between 0.0385 and 0.0390. I will check the other frets tomorrow but looks like I need to do a spot level and re-crown on the 24th. thanks guys. I will up date after the work is done.

Re: NEED HELP AGAIN ON FRET PROBLEM, SORRY

Use a professional fret rocker, otherwise known as a credit card. it has 2 critical lengths so you can measure low and high up the fretboard.

Or you can go to Stewmac and spend a lot of money for the same thing.
