Need help finding a pickup ??

I have an Ibanez Premium, with a floating tremolo. Basswood body flamed maple top. I have a JB trembucker and love the cut and the harmonic sustain, but hate the fact it sounds thin and weak. I am looking for basically a pickup that has the same high cut characteristics and sustain but gives me a thicker chunkier sound. I have tried the Dimebucker and Duncan Distortion trembucker and have come to realize I do not care for the ceramic magnets. I am also not interested in an active pickup. Am I in search of the Alternative 8? What are the differences in the Alinico 5 vs. Alnico 8 magnet? Would you say the Aternative 8 is a JB just with a bigger thicker sound but still has the JB highs and harmonic sustain? Thank you in advance for your help!!!!!!!!

Re: Need help finding a pickup ??

Perhaps an Alternative 8 might be up your alley.
However, since you like the JB and already have it, you can try swapping an A8 mag into it for much cheaper than buying a new pickup, if you're into the modding thing...

Actually I find the JB to be a very dark sounding pickup. What kind if amp are you running? It may be how you have that set.

Awesome! thanks for your help. How would you compare the JB to the Alternative 8? Does the alternative 8 still have the singing highs and sustain? Where do you buy the Alnico 8 magnets at?

Actually, I can use an amp upgrade I am using a crate 120 chorus head with a Jackson 4 x 12 cab. solid state. I need to get a tube preferably a triple rec

Re: Need help finding a pickup ??

I do not like the JB and I don't have many good things to say about it, so I can't answer that with something you'd like. Other guys on here love them, and a lot of the music I like are JB equipped guitars....
I've never tried an Alternative 8 in my own guitars, I've only heard them.

Addiction FX sells magnets. There are many posts about the mag swapping on here, so take your time and do a search for how to do that, unless someone comes along with that info handy, which wouldn't surprise me if they did, because there's a lot of nice people here, and a lot with more knowledge and first hand experience than I have.

There's a lot of good stuff on here, stick around and enjoy the site!

No problem, I'm sorry I wasn't much help really. Hang tight you'll get a way more informative answer from others.
I think the magnets sell for $5 or less...

I do have one question for you Sir, can you tell me more about that Jackson 4x12 cab? Sounds interesting! Got any pics?

It is old school I have had it for over 20 years. Actually was my brothers 1st, then I bought it from him. I can take a picture and upload later. Don't have 1 on me now. It needs to be replaced it was bought back in the mid 90's for 200 - 300 bucks nothing special..lol

There's nothing wrong with solid state amps, but I find them to be brighter than their tube brethren. Maybe try that guitar plugged into a tube amp at the nearest Guitar Mart?

You also might like a Custom, too...you get plenty of cut, output, and nice bass, too. It also takes magnet swaps really well.
