Need help for Tele pickups choice

I have a nice Tele project completed except for pickups. It's an SX Vintage series, upgraded bridge, nut and saddles. I have tried Seymour Duncan sets; Broadcaster and Hot For Tele. Neither set quite works for the quality sound that's authentic I'm looking for. Today I played a Fender Tele with Custom Shop designed pickups and it was spot on with what I want in tones. I should be able to get close with right choice of pickups. I'm looking at GFS Fatbody set now. Can anyone advise on these for authentic Tele "twang" with enough power to do rock? The Duncans I mentioned I experienced a neck pup too weak and a hot bridge that sounds nothing like a Telecaster.

Why not buy the Fender Custom Shop pickups?

If you found what you are looking for, why keep looking?

I really, really like the TV Jones Telecaster set I have in my American Deluxe.

Are you looking for a vintage, authentic Tele tone? The traditional Tele tone isn't difficult, but you need the right ingredients. A good piece of alder or ash helps. The pickups & hardware can only do so much.

You need Broadcaster/Nocaster type pickup that sits between SD Broadcaster and Hot For Tele ("Broadcaster on steroid" I'd say).
Check Cavalier pickup out. Plethora of Broadcaster type pickups are available. Including Nocaster.

Oil city hand wound tele, email Ash and tell him what you are looking for. Those SX teles have a rout for a humbucker... I would be wanting to go down the Keith Richards route - twang in the bridge, warm humbucker chime in the neck and awesome in between tone!

Re: Need help for Tele pickups choice

I have had a SD Jerry Donahue Lead Tele APTL-3JD in my custom Tele bridge spot for a couple of years now and still find it to be superb.. This P/U has lots of great press if you look for it.. It has been around for a long time and still sells because it works, those that have it will praise it..
It will twang but it also does a lot more.. Great punchy mids and low end with great string definition, highs that have the twang but won't make your ears bleed..
I have it paired with a Harmonics Design "Mini Strat" in the neck and they blend together fantastically.. I actually have a Tele that has 3 useful positions and I really do like them all.
I feel like I hit upon a great combination with this setup and after 2 years have no plans to change anything about it..

I would encourage you to give it a look .. SD Jerry Donahue Lead Tele APTL-3JD

Not to beat a dead horse, but you can buy those CS pickups from Fender–I wouldn't look elsewhere when you've already found what you liked.

Re: Need help for Tele pickups choice

I would agree with this, although a Fender Tele with Custom Shop pickups is a different guitar than an upgraded SX.
If pickups like the Vintage Broadcaster or the Antiquity Tele doesn't get a great Tele tone, it isn't the pickups.
