Need help installing Dimarzio Evolutions

Hi everyone,

Just opened up my V to install a set of Dimarzio Evolutions, and the pickup is confusing me. I've changed many pickups, but this one is a little different.

My problem is I don't know which ends should go towards the bridge/neck. Both coils look identical, neither one has a screw coil or a slug coil.

When I look at the back, there is a plate that says Dimarzio pickups, Made in usa. I would think that if I can read that, it is facing the right way. However, the wire comes out of the upper right hand side, which is the opposite direction of the controls. I would think the wire would come out of the lower left hand side

Is this normal? Basically, do I want the backplate reading upside down with the wire out of the left, or the wires coming out the right while being able to read the pickup?

either way will work. Those pickups are not directional.

What he says here is correct, BUT if you want to save yourself some trouble down the line if you go coil splitting and what not, install them the conventional way ... meaning the coil that is over top the side where the coil exits the baseplate that coil goes toward the bridge on the bridge pup; and that coil goes towards the neck on the neck pup. That will put the same coils in the same places as would be on other DiMarzio's with PAF style polepieces, and SD pups with PAF style polepieces.

Since you guys are already here....

I was told that the Evolution sounds just like a bright superdistortion.... how true is that in real life?

Never used a Super D, but according to Dimarzio, it has more mids and less bass than a SD.

Hope you have the chops for that pup, it very unforgiving. Shows all your mistakes in a big loud aggressive way. So goodluck.

I guess you havent cranked it up yet then.

My old Evo sounded TONS better in my stop-tail Charvel then it did in my floating-whammy Ibanez.

Medium output, and very, VERY articulate. No sludge.

I regret not having access to these forums backs in 1997. I probably would've swapped out the Ceramic magnet in it, and tried an Alnico 5 magnet and loved that pickup to death. It's only got about 13.5k of output.
