Re: Need help on changing my pickups (ASAP)

In that case i think ill just take it to a tech. Will he also suggest that? Or will i have to tell him do you think

He'll definitely scrap the whole contents of that control cavity, guaranteed! Tell him you prefer CTS pots. They're quality ones that nearly everyone upgrades to from Chinese ones.

Good Luck!

ps and like Grenade suggested last night, I would request to your tech that the guitar be done with "50's style wiring"

Re: Need help on changing my pickups (ASAP)

^Also that will be a good test to find a competent guitar technician.

If he looks at you like you're from outer space when you mention 50's style wiring find a different tech!

Re: Need help on changing my pickups (ASAP)

Ok, what are the benefits of 50's style wiring?

More blending options because the volumes are completely independent for each pickup versus one acting like a "master volume" when turned to a certain value.

Hopefully someone else will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Need help on changing my pickups (ASAP)

Read up on this. The way yours is wired now when your in the middle position whatever vol. is higher acts as a master vol., with 50's independent wiring you can raise or lower either vol. to get the blend you want to hear. High Quality pots make a difference. I put CTS in my Black Beauty with the stock pickups and it sounds better, more clear to me, and the taper when rolling the vol. or tone back is smoother, not abrupt. When I put Fuglybuckers in Brownie(in my avatar) I used an EVH low friction vol. and 2 CTS tones. Your changing Pickups because you want better tone and that's great, but offshore pots effect tone in a bad way. Don't get discouraged, be patient and do the work once. You will be very happy you did.
Good luck with your upgrade, you will love it when it's all done.

Re: Need help on changing my pickups (ASAP)

Ok so the current wiring is this way specifically because of the coil tap? and thus removing the coil tap and installing my new vintage style pickups would ideally need a complete rewiring?

Hey Grenade, I didn't mean to plagiarize pretty much your exact post from last night.

I was in the process of copying and pasting your post from last night in my last post when you posted this morning!
