Need help on pedals - achieving ambient tone cheap

Hi guys! This is my first ever post about effects pedals in any gear forums.

I was never a pedal guy, until I found Rabea Massaad demoing how to achieving ambient tone and I was completely blown away by the tones that effect pedals could bring.
Does anyone here have any experience building a pedal board based on ambient sounding stuff under a certain budget? I only know that I might need reverb pedals that have 'hall' effect and a delay with....I dont know!
Can anyone guide me through this? And any suggestion for cheap effects pedal to achieve ambient tone?

Thanks!

Re: Need help on pedals - achieving ambient tone cheap

I like two delays and a huge reverb. Hall reverbs are good, modulated are even better. One shorter delay to fatten, one longer that plays off of the shorter one. A compressor is great to give you a solid signal to work with, a volume pedal allows you to do swells. A looper lets you build arrangements. A little modulation of your choice (phaser, chorus, rotary, tremolo) can give another color to work with.

Andy Othling has a good series:

Digitech RP-200 in the loop.

The TC Electronic lineup is a good (Toneprint series) you can get the mini Hall of Fame and mini Delay are pretty affordable used and you can dial in some very drippy tones using the editor. Also, the older Boss reverb is a good all-in-one that does both reverb and delay on the same setting.

I was looking at the regular TC electronic Hall Of Fame and Flashback. I might not get the mini version because it might be limited for what it can do

The TC HOF Mini has a lot of range for what it is. But a regular HOF might make more sense for you.

Seriously - if you need multiple settings, and excess amounts of effect, get a digitech RP and program it up to the gills.

OR as HIFI mentioned, a Shimverb and a Reecho will go far. THe TC versions…hall of fame, delay and corona will go further.

Re: Need help on pedals - achieving ambient tone cheap

I have my HoF Mini configured with a custom Toneprint (through the computer editor) to go from medium length plate reverb with low mix up to a pretty good mix at noon, then extending the reverb time as the mix increases further and adding modulation as the knob goes to max. I essentially have a one-knob, super versatile reverb from subtle hard rock plate verb to immersive soundscape ambience.

Two other great options that I started with are the Line 6 Echo Park and Verbzilla. Tons of great tones in those two pedals.

Yeah mate but looking at colourful pedals might be more interesting. Or is it?! :naughty:

That sounds tempting....

Im using this setup currently. The second row consists of the TC DreamScape (John Petrucci signature), TC Flashback, TC Hall of Fame mini. From there the signal goes to the Boss DD-3 then to the TC Spark mini.

The DD-3 is set to similar to a dotted 8th note delay with a ton of feedback and then the HoF mini is set with a nominal amount of Reverb with whichever TonePrint is selected, and the TC DreamScape is set to a subtle vibrato effect. When all 3 are combined, the effect is a very nice ambient guitar tone that sounds somewhat like an organ.

I've done ambient music for over 20 years. I wrote an article about building an ambient pedalboard. A good, controllable looper is a must.

Re: Need help on pedals - achieving ambient tone cheap

Get a Line 6 M5 or M9 used and go nuts. The M5 can be whatever you want it to be.

How much does it cost you to afford those pedals you mention?
