i am about to start saving for a new head. it will take me a few months because of my checks. so i have time to look around. the problem is around here not many places carry good amps. so i cant play alot of them. i can probably get ahold of a few marshalls to try and alot of mesas. but not much else. heres what i am looking for a head to use for distorted sounds. i use combos for cleans. so it can be single channel. it needs to be able to cover stuff from slightly dirty stuff like allman bros and classic rock. but it also needs to be able to do heavy stuff mostly like C.O.C. and stuff like that. since thats what i play most. and sometimes more of a pantera type gain. it doesnt matter if the amp has reverb but it does have to have an effects loop. so i can use rack mount effects. so far heres what i have owned not counting the cheap combos
1. mesa triple recto- hated it i didnt like the distortion at all. and too many knobs.
2. peavey 5150- good sounding amp just not my style.
3. marshall jcm 800 2204- so far i liked it the best when using an od pedal in front to push it more. but no effects loop.
4. marshall jcm 900- didnt like it either.
5. vox valvetronix- good cleans and good crunch but i didnt like the hi-gain sounds.
the amps i have been looking at so far are.
1. marshall 1987x- has an effects loop and i like plexis. but will have to be modded for more gain. probably by splawn. also does this amp have to be cranked to get it to overdrive?
2. vht deliverance 60- sounds god and has the gain but no effects loop.
3. randall rm module head. has everything but i prefer to have the real amp not a module.
4. hughes & kettner switchblade- the sound clips i heard on the site sounded good. but still not a huge fan of the digital stuff.
as i stated earlier no place around here carries these amps. so i cant just go try them out. i will have to order what ever i get. i have tried most of the mesas though. the f series was ok but i am just not a big mesa fan for some reason. so what do yall think about these amps or what other brands/models should i check out. i am trying to stay below $1700 if i can. the main reason i am looking at the marshall, the h&k, and the randall is i can get them through ams and can do the monthly payment. gotta love being on disability.
