Need help picking out a tube amp for $350-400

Hey everyone,
my buddy is currently looking on ebay to pick up a new or used amp off ebay, and i'm strongly encouraging him to just go ahead and get a tube amp. He's looking for a 1x12 combo, and plays mostly heavy stuff (metallica type i think) but wants something that can clean up nicely. Actually , he probably wouldn't know the difference of a good clean from a decent clean, let alone use it. So based off heavier distortion, what would be a good recommendation? My only suggestion so far is a laney aor (from what i've heard about em, never played one). Any help? thanks everyone.

i think the laneys might be a little too vintage voiced for that.. i would go with another brand considering his budget.. maybe a jcm800 combo?

Used Traynor YCV 40 or 20. If you can get a Traynor YCV 80 you won't need any pedals for Metallica distortion.
