need help picking strat pups..

New here, so I hope everyone is well. I have finally found my perfect guitar at least for feel and playability. It's an American Standard Strat. The only thing is it doesn't cover the music I play very well.

I want something that covers say your 80's hair band stuff, ac/dc, skynyrd, and will also do drop tunings like d and c pretty good as I play a lot of music in drop tunings. I wouldn't mind if it would cover some blues, but not completely neccessary.

It's an alder body strat with maple board if that matters. I play thru a Vox AD30VT with only the on board effects (I'm a newer bedroom player :))

I was looking at the Everything Axe set. Would this be a good choice?

The Everything set would allow you to cover an awful lot of ground. Not sure how it would handle the drop tunings. How low are you looking to go?
Welcome to the forum! :D

Re: need help picking strat pups..

Thanks for the welcome. I will go no lower than drop C and that will be rare. Just some King's X stuff and Stereomud I like are in Drop C.

I think Ty Tabor played a lot of their early stuff in drop tunings and he's my main inspiration.

Re: need help picking strat pups..

Although I have little experience with drop tunings, I will say that I'm not completely thrilled with the JBjr in the bridge in my strat.
Since you have an MIA strat, perhaps a new pickguard and a full sized bridge bucker might be the ticket, as it is already routed for a full sized bucker. I'm thinking maybe the PATB3 or a full sized JB might what you're looking for.
As for the everything axe set, lil 59 and the duckbucker.. they are both good pups, but I prefer true single coils myself APS1's or SSL1's or if you want noiseless check out the Classic stack plus.
Good luck...

I agree about the true singles. A 59 and a Pearly Gates can do drop tunings also . You may want a custom or a custom custom for more variety.

Re: need help picking strat pups..

I'm not a fan of single sized humbuckers, so my advise is to buy a new pickguard in the HSS or HH configuration. Pull out the current assembly, and save it for later, but don't sell it.

For what you want, I'd recommend installing a Custom/Jazz in an HH guard.
Either wire it with a 5 way and 3 knobs, or order the guard with no holes, and create a simple layout. 1 volume and a 3 way Gibson style switch.

Re: need help picking strat pups..

I read the Custom Custom was for "bright" guitars. Would it or the Pearly Gates be best for getting a classic/crunch tone?

I've heard of people using Texas Specials in the N and M with the PG at the bridge, but what would be a good set. I do like the singles on those posistions.

Re: need help picking strat pups..

cc is for bright guitars

but a strat is a bright guitar

I'm thinkin a patb3 in the bridge. PG is a bright pickup, probably would be too much for a strat bridge

if you like the texas pickups then get them
