Need help with Half Stack for Metal !

Re: Need help with Half Stack for Metal !

Or, another option from Blackstar is the new HT Metal series. I don't even know if they're available, but check them out if you want.

I didn't know about this new line. Seems to me like they took the Venue and just switched the power section to 6L6s but i'm sure it will still sound killer I can't wait to try one. Might trade in my 40 for the 60 if it sounds good enough.

Re: Need help with Half Stack for Metal !

Thanks for all the help people !! In the end, i'm 99% sure getting a 5150/6505 head, and some type of Orange cab. If i get a 120Watt head, I assume getting a 120watt cab will be a good match, right ?

I'm definitely gonna look used first !!

Which Orange cab do people think i should get ??

It just depends on how much air you want to move.

Re: Need help with Half Stack for Metal !

Food for thought but the older 5150 combos and 6505 plus combo are more cost effective than the heads, I used to run my 6505 combo with my friend's Emperor 2x12's and it made a glorious noise indeed...

Your back makes glorious noise when you have to move one of those combos too :D

Re: Need help with Half Stack for Metal !

Sure, a lot of us are tube nuts. But there's some great metal amps that are digital/SS.

Blackstar just came out with their ID series. 60W head is $500 new, and 100W head is $600. I tried out the 100W halfstack at Sam Ash a few days ago, and was really impressed with it's range of tones. There's a knob that allows you to choose the sound of every major tube type, so you can shape the gain to your liking. It's also got digital FX. You can do a Twin with 6L6, Deluxe Reverb w/6V6, through some Marshalls of every tube type, all the way to a Diezel Herbert type tone. It's pretty cool!

It's cheap, sounds really good, and look at all the awards it's racking up. I've got a lot of high end tube amps, but still like these kinds of amps. I'm probably going to sell my blue grill Valvetronix head to get the 60W head.
These are amps that sound great at whisper volumes, all the way up to crushing volume.

If you insist on tube, Blackstar has plenty of those too, but they're more expensive and/or less versatile than the ID Series.

Just got the 60W version. Haven't put it through all the paces yet, but I am pretty impressed. The power amp tube emulation does give you a good range of tones.

Re: Need help with Half Stack for Metal !

5150/6505 head and an Avatar contemporary 2x12. Stay away from the +/ii versions of the Peavey unless you like brighter, tighter tone. The regular versions seem to pack more wallop. Go with the 4x12 if you don't mind lugging around a bigger cab. Eminence Swamp Thang or Texas Heat speakers would sound best for the types of music you stated. If you go with the 2x12 I recommend the Swamps but I would mix the Heats and Swamps in a 4. And as always try your best to buy used, no sense in spending extra on brand new gear.

Okay cool :) I actually do love the bright and tight tone on an amp ! :) but the heavy wallop is cool too.

I'm planning on looking used for sure !!

If you need bright and tight, throw an overdrive in front of the amp. If you buy used/cheap Chinese overdrives, you can probably snag three different ones for $100 to see which one works best for you.

Re: Need help with Half Stack for Metal !

5150 or JSX through a Mesa 4x12 is really, really hard to beat for the genre. If you craigslist both you can get a head, cab, TS, and noise gate for under $1200.
