I have been using this wiring for a two humbucker guitar and it works fine with Dimarzio pickups. But I have been reading lots of conflicting info (people saying I need to do a phase reversal, etc).
In any case, here is my current wiring and I modified it for SD colors:
I know it is a little odd, but my ears and logic tell me it works. Here are a couple points:
1) Both pickups are installed with screw poles towards bridge. Not sure why people say one should be flipped 180 degrees. I have yet to see a Dimarzio or SD diagram that suggests one should do this.
2) The hum cancelling position (the fifth one in the list) achieves cancellation because of the fact that a south from one pickup and north from another are parallel. Any phase switch here or flipping of magnet would make no sense. THis is hum cancelling for same exact reason why a single humbucker with its coils wired in parallel is hum cancelling. So this wiring is consistent with that scheme.
3) In order to get the hum cancelling inner coils, that means I had to wire one of the pickups with black as hot and the other with red as hot. I know standard wiring is for black to be hot, red/white connected, and green grounded. But if you think about it, there is no reason why you can't have red as hot, green/black connected and white grounded. It will result in same polarity and essentially same signal at the output. And even Dimarzio shows that concept here:
http://www.dimarzio.com//media/diagrams/D.pdf
Note that they did this so they could achieve a hum cancelling inner coil option. Also they orient both pickups with the screw pole toward the bridge.
Anyway, I just wanted to hear your thoughts. I am about to swap out the Dimarzio pickups with a JB and Jazz Neck...
thanks,
brian
