Need Help With Jeff Beck Telecaster

Hey guys -

I just bought this really amazing Edwards (by ESP) Jeff Beck Telecaster in Tokyo. It is a limited model, brand new, like a relic style. Edwards ESP model E-TE-118/RE JB. What I found interesting is that this guitar came stock with no headstock logo. When I asked, the shop manager said that it was "because it is more expensive than an Edwards ESP model, but a little cheaper than a Navigator ESP model. Personally, I think they left it off so you could easily put a Fender decal on there :newangel:

Here's the guitar I'm talking about:

Now, I tried searching the internet, and couldn't find a single closeup photo of that telecaster Jeff Beck used. What I want to do is find out what Fender decal would go on this one, I guess, finding out what year of telecaster this one was would help. Can you guys help me with identifying what Fender "Telecaster" logo would be correct for this guitar?

Also, of special mention... the humbucker in the bridge position is not the double-cream color that the original Jeff Beck Tele had, BUT this bridge pickup was specially ordered from Seymour Duncan for this guitar. They only made 777 pickups like this one. Mine is a prototype JB pickup that came stock on this guitar.

So, Jeff Beck fans, can you help me out? What replacement Fender "Telecaster" headstock decal would be the right one? Or what year of telecaster did Seymour Duncan modify for Jeff? Thanks in advance for your help.

One last thing for Jeff Beck fans - check out this new Bacchus (Japan) Jeff Beck Esquire Relic - it is fantastic! It's on my wish list

Re: Need Help With Jeff Beck Telecaster

I have got a copy of guitarist magazine around the house somewhere with Jeff on the cover and an extensive interview inside. I seem to remember a little side story with SD and how he made the "Tele-Gib" for Jeff, and how SD received Jeff's "Yardbirds" Esquire in return. I'll see if I can find it, it'll probably have some good info for ya!

Re: Need Help With Jeff Beck Telecaster

Andrew,

Good to hear from you...here is te deal...If that is a "Proto type JB" it has an alnico II magnet and will sound nothing like a "normal" JB, as for the logo Jeff's Tele-Gib never had a Logo on it...Seymour built that guitar and simply did not have time to put one on it before giving it to Jeff!

Re: Need Help With Jeff Beck Telecaster

I think the decal for the headstock would probably have to be an early 50's type. It would surely only be fraud if you tried to sell on the guitar and you advertised it as a Fender. I don't see much of a problem if you're keeping the instrument. There are always Fender decals for sale on Ebay and I have quite often seen Strats with replacement necks and a Fender decal.

To be fair to stevie_bees, I want to point out that this comment was a reference to a question I posed, then deleted.

It wasn't an accusation . . . just a question. ;)

No probs Artie, it was a valid question. I would imagine that there is probably a lot of stuff being sold that isn't all that it seems, and not just guitars!! It's never a problem til you are on the wrong end of a dodgy deal, eh?

I must admit I am a sucker for badges and decals looking how I like them (on my own stuff I might add) and not necessarily as they should be.

Re: Need Help With Jeff Beck Telecaster

Definitely that is a valid question about me putting a decal on it that says "Fender" and selling it as such. Especially since I sell many Japanese guitars from my collection. It would be unethical and professional suicide to sell guitars as Fenders (or Gibsons) when they aren't. I am VERY proud of the Japanese brands and would never cover up any logo that they originally had on there. I think the Japanese guitars being made now are 10X what Fender is turning out (sorry Fender guys!) in a similar price category. I just wanted this guitar of mine to be as close to Jeff's as possible.

Chris pointed out that the original model Seymour gave to Jeff didn't have a logo at all... and that explains EVERYTHING. So I guess not having a logo is more authentic of a replica than anything else. And it's going to save me some money, too!

Thanks so much for your help, guys!

I thought JB gave that to Page because he hated it so much?
