Need help with lead tone.

I have never been a lead player, I'm really a song writer and rhythm player but I have been spending time on my scales and lead playing lately.

I have a Toneport with the metal pack running into a ValveKing for practice and some recording and I'm using a ec400 with emg's.

So, I like the tones of the lead lines on the Evanescence Fallen CD for the type of stuff I'm doing now. How do I get there from here? Which amp model, effects, pickup etc. - I'm pretty clueless.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Need help with lead tone.

Not sure exactly about the tone setup, but as far as leads are concerned, in my experience it all comes down to gain & sustain. You need to be able to stand out over the mix without overpowering it. Stick with a bridge pickup, or if you're on the neck side of things you'll need more bite.

From there, it's all you. Let your playing do the talking. The equipment will only do so much.

Re: Need help with lead tone.

Thanks. If you have the Evanescence cd take a listen to "Going Under" at about 2:35 seconds in. It sounds as if he might be using a wah? Anyhow that's one example.

Re: Need help with lead tone.

I know exactly the part you're talking about. It sounds like a Wah to me. The Wah is by far the most useful pedal for stuff like leads. Just ask Kirk Hammett...
