need help with speakers

I own a crate VFX5112 1x12 50 watt tube amp. Has two EL34's and it's a class AB amp. The amp sounds great but I want to put a higher quality speaker in.

I was looking at the speakers that eminence and celestion make. I've never swapped speakers and I'm not sure what to start with. This amp is used for everything from jazz, prog metal, hard rock, blues, and then some. I think what I want to retain the most from this amp is it's british vibe. I want it to be crunchy without being too brittle, have good low end as well.

let me know what you guys think.

Quite a few people like the Weber Blue Dog. Weber has a great site with really good descriptions of there dif. voicings they are great on the phone as well. I have a 12 150F for my needs. I also have a Emenace Canabis Rex I like.
I don't know enough about them to say if they will meet your needs but I like them.

Re: need help with speakers

if you want a british vibe than a vintage 30 is probably your best choice because its power handling is 60w, By the way, how do you like that amp?

Re: need help with speakers

I think in a one 12" speaker 60 watt class A/B amp I'd stick with a ceramic mag speaker.

The Red Fang and P12B Blue Dog are both alnico magnet speakers. Excellant speakers in a class A or cathode biased amp, but in your amp a Ceramic magnet speaker might sound better.

The Celestion Vintage 30 is a favorite of mine and will give your amp a little more volume and clean headroom too. I like the Celestion G12H30 too. It has a little less edge to the highs, a little more crunch to the mids and more bass than the V-30.

Re: need help with speakers

I've used a couple of Reverend Alltone 12's in small combos (40 to 50 watt) and they sound great, like a jensen meets celestion, good out put, loud, very full and smooth with no major midrange spikes. And they only cost $60!!!!

I am NOT exxagerating this one bit:

Whenever I jam with some fellow music students from school they are always like "what the hell is that you are playing through" and they have to try it out, and I let them.

When I gig, same thing, people from the audience ask later what I was playing through.

third scenario, my buddy prefers to play through my amp than his Marshall DSL 50 when we jam.

It's a good amp. I'll say that much. Best kept secret on the market, you can get them pretty cheap because no one knows the name or are skeptical of the quality. I put it up next to a marshall when I was looking for a new amp, this thing sounded better and was a couple hundred dollars cheaper so I won both ways.

SPEAKERS: I think maybe the celestion vintage 30 might be the one to get, but I'll take more and more suggestions.

Re: need help with speakers

What is the Ohm rating on the stock speaker in your Crate? The reason I ask is because the Vintage 30's and the Black Shadows only come with a 16 ohm or 8 ohm rating. If your Crate stock speaker is rated for 4 ohms than neither a Vintage 30 or Black Shadow will work. Well it might work but you will have a HUGE volume loss, and I question myself to whether it will fry your amp or something. Either way you can't afford to have volume loss when using a 60 watt amplifier. :smack:

Your safe man your amp can go either 8 ohm or 16 ohm. I just looked it up. In that case you can purchase either a Vintage 30 or Black Shadow Celestion directly from the Mesa/Boogie Website for $109.00 + S&H. If you can't afford a brand new one check out Ebay for some used ones. Hopefully this helps. Goodluck. :headbang:
