[Need Info] Washburn MG-74

I am looking into a Washburn MG-74 (probably a 1992 model) but I find conflicting info.

I read on the net that it has an all-alder body but the photos of the one I saw clearly have a flamed maple top (purple finish, gotta love that era!)

Once it had gold hardware (evident from the locking nut), HSH, no pickguard (again, specs say clear pickguard) master volume, master tone and a Floyd bridge.

It's also been heavily abused with all kinds of hack-n-slash modifications that left all kinds of screw holes bare for all to see (well, if one was looking at the back of the guitar anyway :9:).

The worst of which is the installation of an import Charvel Floyd which doesn't match the trem route AT ALL.

Any insight on the model would be greatly appreciated, also, what would be a fair price for one?

Thanks!

Re: [Need Info] Washburn MG-74

My brother brought one of those as his first serious axe. He still has it in mint condition in his closet (!). I once tried to buy it off him and he asked for NZ$1000! Sheesh, no brotherly love there.

From what I remember, it was alder bodied, flame topped, gold hardware, HSH (Washburn stock), clear pickguard, tone and volume, Washburn licenses Floyd.

I'm not sure, but maybe the MG-70 was without flametop?

Sorry if that's no help!

No, that's the 74, their difference being the maple board, and yeah, everywhere I looked it said it has a clear pickguard.

Dunno what to think...

Re: [Need Info] Washburn MG-74

If it's US made and reasonable, pick it up. You may be able to swap the trem back to the original and it should be a nice guitar. I really like the quality of all the US Washburns I've played. I did have a Maverick that was really nice and reminds me of this.

Re: [Need Info] Washburn MG-74

That model is not US made.. I dont have the answers to you questions bro.. I have an old catalog in storage somewhere, but cant get to it..

FWIW, I had one of the non US MG series (340 I think) and it was a very nice axe..

Richard prolly knows the answer, but he's been busy.

Well if it's not US made then it's value is probably somewhere in the $200-300 range tops and that's in good condition stock. If someone had put quality pups and bridge in there I could see investing that kind of money into it.

I'm not trying to be rude, but the US custom shop made Maverick I had sold for just about $400 and it was in pristine condition with a case. I recently bought my Silverado which was a little beat up for $300 in a store and it was there for months.

Unless you are in love with the guitar I wouldn't put too much money into it.

Re: [Need Info] Washburn MG-74

No, BloodRose is right, it's the top Korean-made model, not a US-one.
What's making me go back to it though is that it's the only model with a Maple board.

And I know what you're saying, I have a pristine-condition MG-122 (love this axe) and another kinda-beat MG-100, both US-made axes.

This one's condition is worse than both (screw holes everywhere from repeated mods, check the hole where he installed a strap-button on the right of the neck plate) and it goes for about 200 USD so I was kinda wondering if it's worth it but then again, how lower can a music store go? (It's not a guy selling it).

Is it worth it? The stock trem was a pretty cr@ppy one so I def. don't wanna return it to stock but I don't think I can find another quality trem that will fit to that route...

Re: [Need Info] Washburn MG-74

That Charvel trem may in fact be a Schaller-made unit. I know the lefty models were made by Schaller, as Takeuchi either did not or would not make them.

And the Takeuchi trems aren't bad. They're a step down from the Schallers but better than the true "no-name" trems.

Re: [Need Info] Washburn MG-74

From the looks of it it DEF is a Schaller copy, dunno if it was Schaller-MADE though.

Here are some more closeups, again, click the photos for the full-blown version:

Although the logo is never perfectly visible the Charvel toothpaste logo can be made-out instead of the Schaller logo...

What bothers me a lot is how completely off this trem is compared to the route.

I can't really think of a non-original trem that WOULD fit in there...

I know this is several years old but I have the exact same model and for years have beel trying to find out why mine was made without a clear pickguard. It is a killer guitar. If anyone knows anything about the Wahsburn MG74 made in 1992 without the pickguard I would like to hear about it. Thanks
