Need mixdown help

ImmortalSix

John Mayer's Mankini
Hi guys, I just recorded a song with a friend of mine, and I need some mix help.

I have a lot of education and some experience mixing, but I can't seem to apply the things I have learned to result in a great sounding mix.

I think I simply "don't have the ear for mixing," or haven't developed it yet.

The song is 2 acoustic guitar tracks, 1 electric bass track, and 1 vocal track.

I recorded the acoustic guitar with a large diaphragm condenser, the bass direct through a Line6 box, and the vocals through the same large diaphragm condenser.

The sound on the guitar tracks is decent, the sound on the bass track is terrible (EQ problems, too much low lows, no punch), and the vocal sound is pretty damn good. I mean all this in terms of the recording, not the performance; the vocal is pitchy and will need some subtle auto tuning, and the guitar performance is, well, good enough.

But I don't know enough about applying compression, EQ, and reverb, etcetera, to get things sounding really good and natural.

I recorded the whole thing in Reaper, and I could either send it to you as a full Reaper project, or send you the wavs of the naked tracks.

Anybody want to take a crack at mixing it for me?

Re: Need mixdown help

I just wanna hear the finished product and read a detailed account of what you guys did to it:cool2:

Re: Need mixdown help

I think this will actually be kind of cool. Every mix will sound a little different and be done on different gear/software. It will be fun to compare notes.

Re: Need mixdown help

Emails sent, huge thanks everyone!

My buddy Kyle (the guy who's singing) just asked me about it - anybody close to done on a mix?

Re: Need mixdown help

sorry man, this is so out of my normal style that its going to take me a while to get a good take on it. Also it sounds lacking without drums to me....but that may also be my lack of production ability!

Re: Need mixdown help

That is an awesome sound you got outta that. How'd you do that?:eyecrazy:
Thank you!

Would you really like to know? I didn't do anything esoteric, but put a good 4 hours into it. Time and repeated listens were my first port of call.

Second priority was to get the vox into the mix instead of sitting on top of it.

Third priority was to get some movement into the mix, as it sounded very static. I wanted both vertical (dynamic) and horizontal (mix width and depth) movement.

I can go into a blow-by-blow list if anyone is interested.
