Need More Gain. Any Suggestions?

Still love my Classic 30 amp, but I need more gain. My distorion pedal's input jack is pretty messed up and I know I can get a better sound anyway. The Classic 30 is giving me enough gain for any classic rock and some lighter metal but...it's a Classic 30 and I can't always turn it up in the house.
I think most of the long-time members here know I play shred stuff.
What do you guys recommend for a pedal? Or should i go with a pickup booster?

BTW, just want to say hi to everybody. Been super busy this year so have only stopped by a few times. Had 7 jazz concerts already with the highschool jazz band. Another coming up on the 17th.:dance:

Anyone tried the DOD YJM 308. Sounds like it might be what I'm looking for.

I was just going to suggest that a Classic 30 is the wrong amp for a guy who likes highgain shred.

If you want an amp for that, get a Vox Valvetronix head/cab, Carvin Legacy, Peavey 5150, DSL 50, Crate Blue Voodoo, or L6 Flextone. You have an amp that's made for clean blues! You need a highgain head with a closed back cabinet.

You might want to try some high gain pre-amp tubes too.

I don't need a highgain head; definately don't. Too big, too loud, too heavy...etc. I bought the Classic 30 so I could play jazz and blues and it worked great with a pedal. I just saw the YJM308 and the DOD250 on MF, would one of those give me enough gain?

Don't know about the pedals you mentioned but there's more than enough good pedals out there to get you there. After all that's what those things are made for.

I'd recommend a Rocktron Silver Dragon with a lower gain tube in there like a 12au7a or similar. Blends in real nice and naturally.

Is the Carvin Legacy really that good an amp for that sort of thing? I know Vai is basically a high gain shredder but without all those effects and what not is the Legacy a good amp in general for high gain tones?

I don't think that it has been discontinued, but I could be wrong. It sells for around $200 new.

How do you like yours zerberus? Can you describe the sound of it? How's the mid frequency since it doesn't have a mid knob?

Mesa Bottle Rocket on ebay, or a Maxon OD808/OD9/OD820.

That or an Ibanez TS-9 and mod it yourself.

I don´t own one anymore.... but it works ideally as a clean gain boost.

A Tubescreamer or SD Pickup boosted doesn´t have a Mid knob, either

As Chops has mentioned, yeah I play in a hard rock/heavy blues band but I'm capable of more Van Halen/Satriani type styles as well... Let me give you some background on my setup.

I use a Carvin Legacy and when you get right down to it it's not as high gain of an amp as you would think! This amp, on 7-8 is about what a MESA or other similar high-gain amp is on 5. But thats not anywhere near the end of the story. It makes up for the inherent lack of actual distortion by being REALLY chunky, fat, liquidy, and harmonically rich. Its one of those amps that FEELS real good to play, you know?

Anyways its a killer amp... but it won't do metal or shred on its own. It needs just a weeee bit more gain and juice. Enter the OCD. Used judiciously as a light od/boost it adds sustain, definition, harmonic clarity, and drive to the sound. Honestly I love mine and even though I'd still use it with another amp, for this rig it NAILS what I need.

If you'd like to hear what it sounds like, visit www.myspace.com/gtralien or www.myspace.com/jailhouserockers and listen to "Her Song" Listen to all the solos and the gainier rhythm parts. Thats my EBMM Silhouette through the Legacy with the drive on about 6 and the pedal's drive on about 4 or 5.

As a side note I dont' really think you NEED a whole lotta gain to play shred... look at Yngwie for example. Vintage-output pickups (ever tried hs3's? They're quiet!) into a DOD booster pre, into a loud-ass Plexi with KT88's. Not nearly as gainy as you'd think but fluid and bold. The grind in his sound is mainly power tube gain from being cranked up so loud.
