Need multi effect advice for new gig.

I have a new gig I am auditioning for on Friday. The music is fairly simple but it looks to be a fun gig. The band does all 80’s dance new wave. Mostly John Hughes movie soundtrack type of stuff. INXS, Simple Minds, Psychedelic Furs and tunes from the usual suspects are on the set list. The upside is the band only does corporate gigs so the pay is good and I really don't mind the music. Plus twice a month I get to dress like I am in high school again, the band goes all out with the stage show.

The cool challenge of the gig is trying to reproduce all of these 80’s guitar tones. Most of these guitar players were Edge fans so there is a lot of echo and chorus going on, sometimes there are even a couple of delays being used on one track. It looks like I am going to have to bring my entire PedalTrain Pro to gigs. I am not comfortable dragging megabucks worth of effects to a gig. Theft and the hassle of dragging a big board is my main concern.

I am thinking about getting something like the Boss GT-100 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal, my only concern is can I program songs as banks? For example can I have one bank that is song A and have that layout of effects and settings and then set a bank ( B, C. D,...) for each song in the set?

Any info on the Boss GT-100 is much appreciated. If someone knows of a better multi-effects unit I could use the suggestion, I don’t want to go above the $500 range.

Re: Need multi effect advice for new gig.

well, the Pod HD just price-dropped at Sweetwater to $199, free shipping. If you get a shortboard from somewhere I'm sure you can program a bunch of songs in. I bought one today :D

It's got some synth and portamento functions I'm thinking will be ridiculously RADI-COOL. I'm pretty excited. hehe

Re: Need multi effect advice for new gig.

Yeah, pretty sure that's possible, I have a GT-6 that I've hardly ever used, but I remember being able to save a whole chain of effects as a patch and recall it whenever with the footswitch(es).

Nice suggestion the only down side is I would have to get some kind of foot controller. I did look at the Line 6 POD HD400 that might work I just don't have a lot of experience with the sound of the POD effects. How is the tone?

Well, that's gonna be a pretty derisive matter. I think they're great, but will know for sure in a few days. There's someone who was selling an hd500 in the trading Post for 300, which would be better by a large amount than the desktop. Its a floor unit, has more functions, and is full midi and stereo ins and outs. You can also preamp a mic through it at the same time.
I dunno about the GTs, but I do know that I don't hear a lot of mocking from the Axe FX crowd like they do Line 6, and I think that's because its not in the same ballpark.
Hey, maybe you need an M9 or M21? Just effects instead of the amp sims too?

I'm pretty sure that the Line 6 M9 will do what you ask. I've heard pretty great stuff about the modulation and delays it has.

Jon, I'm not sure if it was just a typo or not but there is no M21, it's the M13 you're thinking of. Bruce, that may be more what you're looking for depending on how many effects you need for a song. I can't imagine an M9 not cutting it though, especially if you combine it with your H9.

More like a derpo. I thought the big one was the 21 with 3x4. Sowwy

Re: Need multi effect advice for new gig.

I have a GT 100. It will do what you want but I recall it being about $550.

Re: Need multi effect advice for new gig.

I have the gt10. If 80's is the point of focus then it would work really nice. Might be able to pick one up for around 250-350 bucks. What I'd suggest is get either the gt10 or the gt8 for fx & all around control, then use a Tech 21 Character Series pedal in it's fx loop for amp modelling sounds. Should end up for a total of less than 500 bucks.

If ya still wanna go for gt100 then that is cool too, not a giant leap ahead between the gt8 & gt10. You can have a total of four digital delays going on at once along with a chorus, reverb, eq, volume/wah/whammy, OD, noise gate & compressor. The gt100 shows only 1 control pedal on it, but if you update it to the latest firmware then it will also allow you to use the looper pedal as a control pedal too. You get 8 manual assigns per patch to perform specific things & 2 simple assigns to turn on/off, delay tap kinda stuff for the two pedals.
There are 50 user banks, 4 presets per bank. In stompbox(manual) mode the number pedals(1,2,3,4) can be used to turn individual fx blocks on or off, so it can be like having eight stompboxes that are available to be turned on/off.

One feature you get with the gt100 which is not available with the previous gts is that the stompbox mode can be saved per patch basis, earlier it was globally set. Another thing is there is no delay/reverb spillover between patches in the gt100 which was there in the gt8 & gt10.

Hey man, sounds like a cool gig.

Definitely get an affordable unit because I think it will get you that much closer to the 80's vibe.

There are a ton of youtube videos with guys apeing 80's tones on their T.C. Electronics G-Systems. There's absolutely no reason why you couldn't use their settings as a suggestion when you get your new unit.

Re: Need multi effect advice for new gig.

I was in that band - except it was actually in the 80's! U2, Billy Idol, the Cars, Cure, Call, etc....

Man, if I still had my red parachute pants...

I say get a used GT-6 or 8 or whatever. Way more programability than you will ever need.

Thanks for all of the great advice everyone I think I am leaning towards the GT100 I need to run multiple delays. I had an old ART SGX 2000 that I loved but sold that would have been perfect for this gig. I might look into picking up another one used but it has a separate foot controller and I have the feeling the BOSS will have a better sound. The big plus is the BOSS can go directly to the house board.

Hey man, sounds like a cool gig.

From what the guys tell me they have a blast. The dance floor is packed with aging frat boys and drunken housewives. Don't ask for gig pics or video because there is no way I am letting you guys see mee dressed like this.

It'd be awesome to find a bunch of busted 80s digital equipment on eBay and rack it up in a huge rack and just wheel it up behind you. Use the new board of course, but have some "zazz" for visual effect.

and, yes. Hollywood....MON-TROSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck. Those gigs are where the money is. Parties, weddings and corporate functions ...most have a good sized budget and many planners don't bat an eye when you quote them a price that would make a club/bar manager's sphincter pucker quicker than Oprah can get to the buffet.

Re: Need multi effect advice for new gig.

I have a lot of experience with the M13, and that's what I'd recommend if you just want effects and not amp sim.

It can behave like a pedal board where you enable/disable individual effects, or you can use "scene mode" where it acts more like a traditional multi with patches/presets. It can also send and receive MIDI program change and control change messages, it has a loop insert, it takes expression pedals, and it's quite simple to set up.

The effects themselves range from pretty good to excellent, and there are a ton to choose from.

Re: Need multi effect advice for new gig.

If you guys don't play Working for the Weekend... well that's just a crying shame.
