Need opinions on a potential trade MIM Strat for Epi Sheraton II

I'll start off saying I know this trade is apples and oranges.

I've got a MIM Strat w/ SD Pearly Gates in the bridge. It has been my baby and go to ax for a few years. Recently though I've been GASing for a semi-hollow.

I found a guy locally with an Epi Sheraton II and he is willing to trade. As far as I know it's stock and in good condition.

Here's my big question... What's your take on the Sheraton in general. Tonally. Quality. Etc...

I'm scared I will miss my strat but I can't justify a purchase right now. I have to trade in orde to get a new guitar. Of course MIM Strats are a dime a dozen. But this one has really grown on me.

I hope to meet up and test drive the guitar soon. What should I look for or be aware of? I've never owned a semi hollow before... anything I should know?

Quite a different guitar...personally, I would hesitate to trade my go-to axe to satisfy gas.

Sheraton's are pretty darn good as reasonably-priced semi-hollowbodies go...it would probably benefit from new pickups and electronics right away if they are stock...but to go from a strat to a sheraton is quite a tonal jump. I'd be interested to hear what you think after you try it.

Regardless, Sheraton's are good guitars (and price wise, the MIM strat+upgrades is about the same price as a new Sheraton, so $$-wise it is a decent trade).

with a good set of pickups and maybe some new guts the sheraton can be an amazing guitar. the only things stock on mine are the tuners (for now) so you might have to put some money into it to make it a player so keep that in mind. also they tend to be bright guitars so some tinkering with different pickups, mags and pots etc will probably have to be done to get your desired tone.

the only things i would say to look out for along with the usual stuff are the frets and the binding, my high E string used to get caught under the frets and some of the binding has come loose but im not sure how common that is.

if you want a good guitar that may or may not need modding id say go for it, if you want a guitar to play and love right away id say keep the MIM for now and save up for a sheraton. but hell you never know you might love it stock. just give it a test drive and see what happens

Epi Sheratons are nice guitars, but man, they are WAY different than what you are trading. I think you'd get "trader's remorse" after this deal.

I think the Epi is probably worth more, depending on condition.

The retail values are relative with an edge to the Sheraton. If you're ok with the change in guitar type go for it. If you can keep your PG to put in the Sheraton, even more so!!

Thanks for the opinions so far.

My Strat does have a special place in my heart but my style and preferences have been changing a bit. So this may be a good deal. Still waiting to hear back on whether or not he is fully interested.

I know what I'll miss tonally in this trade and that I may fake some of it with some mods. I will miss my trem. I don't use it much... but when I want it I have it.

What pups would you say would be a good match for the Sheraton. I want something Warm. Nothing overly bright. Maybe a P90 of sorts in the neck and a nice fat and warm bucker in the bridge?

If the Strat has meaning to you keep it. As said, the Sheraton will need new pickups and electronics, possibly tuners as well.

I put Gibson Classic 57 + in the bridge and Duncan PG in the neck on my Sheraton.

+1. Love mine. I put in a C8/'59N and it sounds great. Warm, rich, full. One of my favs.

My good friend has a Sheraton II and he loves it. However, they do require a pickup change to be really good. He's got a Jazz in the neck and a Distortion in the bridge - that guitar sounds awesome.

That being said though, it is not a Strat, and does not get Strat tones.

That's a good thing. It would be considered a benefit to have a guitar that could produce something besides treble.

Hmm...that's a strange combo. How's that Distortion fare in that guitar?

Sounds excellent! I was surprised as well. When he first told me I was like "uuuh..." but I've been listening to him play that guitar for years now and it's very clear and articulate. He's not a really high gain player either - but it works.

All the guitars in this song are the Sheraton with the Distortion pickup: http://t.co/wTTKmiV

Sheratons are excellent candidates for P-Rails. I used to love the 59n/JB combo, too.
