Need opinions on splitting my hummers

Hey forum,
I posted some earlier threads on my beginers interest of different combos of SD humbuckers for my Epi LP Standard. At that point i had no idea what splitting pickups 'really' meant, but i have been somewhat educated now on the process and effect thanks to the sickest group of people out there, SD User Forum :cool3: . Anyways i am searching for a tone that would give me a real warm meaty sound for rythm playing but with a lot of bite and energy, while i could have the option of a screamin Stevie Ray bluesy solo tone but not so raw sounding somewhere in between SRV and Clapton's strat tone. I have decided that splitting would be the best option for this. My choice in Pickups at this point in time are a AP2 in the bridge, and a Seth Lover Neck. I don't really know if this is the best call though. My question is what pickups in what positions would be best? And what pick ups give that strat tone im looking for when split?
Any conversation on my tonal dispute will help as i am in the learning process and need guidance desperately. thanks again for the time.

I would say the A2 pro would be great for that. They are warm but biting, and they sound really nice split. You may want to think of a Custom Custom though so you split sound will have decent output (about 7.2 K compared to 3.9K)

okay so i think im sold on the AP2 in the bridge. How does this pup sound split? and how does a custom custom sound split? I am still new to splitting, are both pickups usually split or can just one be split? What has worked well for you guys?

Reckless Abandon, did you mean an A2p in the bridge and the neck position? or and A2P in the bridge, custom custom in the neck? or... ???

you cant split a stock seth lover ... it only has two wires and you need 4 to split .. i bet you could get this as a custom shop order if you really want it ...

i have split the a2p in the neck and like it alot .. i have also split the 59 in the neck and like it very much too ... i have split the JB and the C5 in the bridge and they both sound excellent too ...

i am a bit curious as to your trying to get strat sounds (srv / clapton) with humbuckers .. given that these guys play(ed) strats, you are only gonna get 'so close' with split humbuckers ... like the man said, if you want to sound like a strat, by a strat

Actually, you CAN split Seth or any humbucker with only 2 conductors. You just have to convert it to a 4-conductor which is not as difficult as it sounds.

Personally I'd take Tina monday tuesday thursday and friday and Anna wednesday saturday and sunday...but then again, how you decide split your hummers is really a decision only you can make

You would put the aph2 pro in the neck and a hotter pickup in the bridge i.e custom custom, custom, jb etc, but the aph2 pro sounds great split in the neck in my guitar it sounds nice quacky and bites. You could put the APH2 in the bridge but it wont be very loud when split since its no higher than 10k

im still confused all together on what pups i should actually purchase and split. Now im thinking ap2 split in the neck and something hotter in the bridge like a PG or 59' unsplit. help me out please im lost. :help: :help:

Im not trying to get the exact strat tone i just want a similar SRV/clapton type sound but not exact. Are there any choices of SD's out there that will accomplish this feet best, either split or regular?

APHII Neck, CC Bridge, both 4 conductor.

hello there, i've got a Patrick Eggle Berlin Evo 22, which has a similar construction to a Les Paul. it's got a '59 at the neck and a custom custom at the bridge with a coil split switch. i can confirm that both pickups sound excellent when split, especially the custom custom. it's not a pickup i would have thought of buying, but it came on this guitar, and it really is excellent. like the man said, it won't sound exactly like a strat, but you can get that sweet airiness that you rarely get in a humbucker, although with a les paul scale length you won't get that real snappy, spanky sound. ( so many adjectives! do they even make sense? )

I have a a2p in my bridge split, very very twangy, good for coutry-esque sounds but very trebly.

Im thinking i only want one pup split probably the bridge pup and leave the neck alone with a stock SD, but don't know yet which one. I think that for my tone i need a meaty neck pup that has a real warm, smooth tone but handles overdrive well, and then split the bridge pup with a hotter but not brighter pup, that has real nice highs and mids. Does this make sense? and would this type of combo satisfy a deep blues, southern rock tone with a srv/clapton bite? i believe a AP2 in the neck is a solid winner, but still questionable for the bridge.

This is, of course, one of those things that will be personal preference, but I would do it the opposite. (And, in fact, have.) The neck pup is the one that is traditionally, a bit muddier or darker, and really cleans up nicely by splitting. The bridge, on the other hand, is already trebly and bright, and doesn't react as well, IMO, to splitting.

Then again, it will probably depend on the pups too.

Hey thanks man i wouldn't of known, i plan on splitting a ap2 in the neck and keeping the bridge pup normal is that possible? and what pup for the bridge do you reccomend for the tone im searching for?

I'd buy a couple push pull pots so you can have either series or parallel or single coil operation and wire them so that the way you plan to use the guitar is wired with the pots in the down position.

I'd definitely go with some push/pull pots, so you don't have to drill that top. Yes, that wiring setup is very easy.

As for the bridge, if you're not going to split it, I'd go with a 59. Unless you're wanting something hotter.

yes i am looking for something hotter than a 59' and not as bright for the bridge. i want something with really nice sweet highs and mids and loads of sustain. any suggestions?

I'd definitely go with the Alnico 2 Pro neck and the Pearly Gates bridge! Both split nicely.
The APH is nice and warm in humbucker and surprisingly clear in single coil mode. The PGb is nice and bright, but when you start to bring the tone control down, (.047mf cap on the tone) the lower mids and bottom end come out a bit. In single coil mode it has a nice bite to the tone.

I also wired my guitar to allow either the inner or outer coils in single coil mode and this really "made the deal" for me! The inner coils have a bit of that "Stratty" position 2 and 4 tone to them - especially the bridge and middle positons, and the outer coils are stronger and clear with a bit of a "tele" tone in the middle positon.
