Thanks to TattooedCarrot, I scored a brand new '57 Reissue Les Paul Custom from Daves guitars at a ridculously low price :)

It should be here Monday!

Since I have Seths and BB's in my other Pauls, I want something a little less "vintage paf" sounding and little more nasty (think G'N'R, Classic Metal etc...) Being that the Custom is all Mahagony w/ no maple cap, I'm figuring its going to be pretty dark sounding from the start.

I'm thinking maybe a APH/59 combo, or maybe even a JB in the bridge to brighten things up a bit. Any thoughts?

Matt

Re: Need Pickup Advice for my Les Paul Custom

wow possibilities are endless. If that guitar was mine i would put any of the following pickups in it and not regret it.

JB
Custom 5
Custom
Distortion

JB would probably be your best bet, seeing as how its soo popular in Les Pauls. But if you really want nasty, the Distortion will definately deliver.

Re: Need Pickup Advice for my Les Paul Custom

I'd go Custom/59. That should deliver the goods in that guitar. I would worry that the APH would be a tad too dark in that guitar, with no maple cap.

+oooooooooooooooneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh[/announcer guy voice]
custom should be pretty damn nasty in that guitar.

Re: Need Pickup Advice for my Les Paul Custom

How do you guys think a 59/JB would fair? I typicially don't care for the JB in maple capped guitars because its too bright, but maybe it would work well in this one?????

All opinions welcome!

Re: Need Pickup Advice for my Les Paul Custom

Matt, without a doubt go for the custom and the Pearly gates neck!!! The custom has so many Paf qualitys but, can do the nastier stuff also. The Pearly gates neck matches like butta with it. I have the same set in my 91 Gibson Explorer and they are in there for good. I LOVE IT!!!!

Re: Need Pickup Advice for my Les Paul Custom

My LP Custom w/solid mahogany body sounds great with a C-5/59. The lows are tight, the mids let the mahogany do the talkin, and the highs are bright enough for it to sound natural on the top end. For necks, the 59, Jazz, and PG would be the best choices.

Re: Need Pickup Advice for my Les Paul Custom

I think you would be good to go with a JB/59 combo, but the Custom would be a good choice as well.

Yeah, I think thats the way I'm going to go, at least to try out first. I have some extra JB's lying around, so I'll give it a shot. Round 1 goes the the 59/JB....Stay tuned....

Don't forget that a Les Paul Custom has an ebony fretboard, that will give a brighter edge as well. So I wouldn't go too bright.

This is exactly right.....I usually go a good bit darker on Ebony fretboards for that reason.
