Need pickups for Epi LP Black Beauty

Re: Need pickups for Epi LP Black Beauty

There's enough coils in a Back Beauty as it is, and dozens of potential tone combinations if wired that way. I don't see any point in putting a P-Rails in one of these. It's bordering on absurd.

You do realize that the P-Rails don't have any more coils than a standard humbucker, right? The difference is instead of two standard humbucker coils, there is one large P90 coil and one small singlecoil. And for the record, P-Rails have a unique tone, especially the humbucker setting due to the mismatched coils. Just because it has more tonal options doesn't mean you have to use them all or even wire them accordingly. To eliminate a pickup because of how many options it gives you is ridiculous. It should be eliminated simply based on tone, same as any other pickup selection.

Pearly Gates n, Pealy Gates b (with a8) and a Custom or a Distortion, wired with duncan triple shots, independient volumes for each pickup a fender TBX as master tone and a kill switch (the selector switch wired to only do that)

This configuration sounds killer. Except I would put in a SH-6n with an RCA4 in the neck, a JB in the middle and a Distortion or Black Winter in the bridge.

that configuration was for the op, if it was for me it would put a Pearly Gates Bridge with an A3 in the neck, a JB with a RCA5 on the middle and a Dimebucker in the bridge, i really prefer PAF like tones on the neck

Just got my LP Custom back from a refret. Installed a pair of Dimarzio PAF 36th ann. So far they sound very good. Bright with an incredible amount of upper harmonics and they seem hotter than they're spec'd out to be. Neck is bright and woody. No mud, but pinch harmonics just jump of the board. Never heard a neck pickup quite like it.
Gonna try the Whole Lotta Humbucker set that was in my LPC in my SG and do a shootout of the Dimarzio vs BKP Riff Raffs.

not into changing magnets and dealing with wax.

Re: Need pickups for Epi LP Black Beauty

no problem then, just raise the pearly b a bit while lowering the pearly n will be fine as well

nah.I don't have any spare cookware and I don't know where to get magnets.

Cookware? What does baking cookies have to do with PU's?

There's not much wax in most American-made PU's, and in the dozens and dozens of mag swaps I've done, I've never had to melt the wax to get a magnet out, nor have I had to replace any wax.

Most of us get our magnets from Addiction FX. Huge selection, low process. Much cheaper than buying new PU's and crossing your fingers. Look at a tutorial on mag swapping, it only takes a few minutes.

Oh.I mean the wax potting after swapping magnets.SD's website specifically said to re-wax the PU's after mag swaps. Anyways thanks for that site. Now to browsing mags

No need to re-wax any part of a PU after a mag swap. There's always some wax left on the baseplate and bottom of the coils, and that'll hold the new magnet in tight. Only takes a tiny bit.

Re: Need pickups for Epi LP Black Beauty

bump.I need new pickups urgently as I got a gig a week later. How about actives?Blackouts Metal bridge with an EMG 81 in the neck and EMG 60 middle? Are mixing actives OK?
OR can I use just EMGs, move the 81 to the bridge and use an 85 in the middle?
EDIT:Do Blackouts benefit or suffer from 18v?I plan on doing it along with the EMG 81 neck and 60 middle.
