Need price and advice by 3 EST!

As some of you know, my OLP sounds heavenly to me, better than my LP. I have not replaced the pot, switch ect nor the wiring yet. At practice the switch finally gave out, it's just oo cheap for gigging so I will have to get it replaced, I am going to take my OLP in today to see what can be done and how long it will take. Also, should I get the original vintage style trem replaced too? It also is probably cheap but what difference will a replacement do to sound, action, ect ect? I need to know, how much will this cost for a new pot, pickup switch, and seperatly priced, a new trem bridge cost me? How long will it take? here is a pic of the bridge of it...

man i like the looks of that thing!

the only OLP's like that i have seen are natural and that brownish goldish looking top...

i know that a guy on here was saying the heavier bridge's tend to resonate, sustain etc longer.

how are you liking the pickups?
have you thought about switching to others or are these doing the job?

a new pot will run you about $5, new switch $10-15, new tremelo about $70-100 (any cheaper trem will not make much difference then the one in there now). in my opinion you should buy the pot + switch and wire it yourself (its not hard trust me) and you wont have to pay anyone to do it and you wont have to wait to get it done. I would not recommend a new trem because the original still works good and they are quite expensive compared to the original cost of the guitar.

Ksmith brings up 2 good points

1) man it really is pretty easy to do, changing a pot etc.

2) the bridge would prob cost about as much as the gutiar, maybe you could hold off and get a floyd rose with dropped D!!


i guess this shows us why a guitar can be more expensive u know MIM vs MIA etc because of the cost of the hardware...

anyway man i dig that thing, if i could find one that looked like that i may would have one to!

I would wire myself but I can NOT sauter to save my life. Yes I know it's sad, plus they don't charge anything for it so it's not a big deal. I could however order the parts myself, somebody wanna tell me what the heck I need? I really have no clue. As for the other question, I'm satisfied with the Dimarzio, I will here on out use Dimarzio pickups, they just suit me soo much better and I wish they made gold covered one's so I could put one in my LP too. The neck pickup is an epi i stripped of the gold cover, hence the gold screws on it, i didn't use a neck pickup much at the time and the epi was a ton better than the olp stock one, but I want another Dimarzio for the neck. Everyone around here including our bassist, drummer and other guitarist says it's a lot better sounding than any other guitar I've played and it was free too! Girlfriends rock! Look on ebay for the purple one's, they don't make them anymore.

not real clear on your second question (i'm assuming you want a suggestion for a neck dimarzio?) I would suggest an Air Norton or Paf Pro. Paf pro will be more 'classic' sounding while the air norton will have an 'open/air' sound. The norton has quite a bit of bass so if your guitar is bass-heavy then go for the paf pro.

Wasn't really asking for a suggestion on a neck pickup haha but thats ok, that's exactly what I'm looking at actually, not the paf pro, this guitar isn't bass heavy. What kind of pots am I getting and switch? I'll probably get them off stewmac.

you should get a 500k pot and a normal 3-way toggle. If you want a 'different sound' then you can buy a 3-way switch that splits both pickups when on the middle position but i'm not sure what they are called or if you will be able to find one. the dimarzio site has the schematics if you do get one. i'm pretty sure that stew mac has a price floor (check their site on this) so you wont be able to order from them if this is all you are buying. Local guitar stores will carry both and you wont have to pay shipping.

The pot is probably 500K, that's usually the choice for humbuckers. As for the switch, there are two kinds of Gibson-style switches, one with the contacts straight out the back (like in a Les Paul) and one with the contacts going sideways (used where there's more room to spread out, but not as much cavity depth, like in an SG). Look at the original, and buy one that looks like it.

Since you're ripping out the old pot & switch, practice your soldering on them before commencing on the geetar. Soldering's not hard, but it takes a little practice. It is without a doubt a skill any electric guitarist should have. You learned to play the guitar, you can learn to solder. There are plenty of tutorials on the web; Google is your friend.

Replace the switch and the pot ASAP...if it were mine and I could find one that fit with no mods to the guitar I wold replace the tremolo too...the stock trem on the OLP's is cheep and a new/better trem will improve your tone a lot. I know that the guitars are cheep and a good trem will cost you a good but cimpared to the guitar...just keep the old tremolo and if you ever sell the guitar put the old trem back on it and you still have a nice tremolo to put on something else later!

trust me...a CTS pot, switchcraft switch, Orange drop cap, and a good tremolo, and you will thank me!

BTW...learn how to solder, you will also thank me for that!
