Need PU advice for a Les Paul

Wow, I can't believe I never looked for this forum before. Anyway, first post, ding ding ding ding ding!

Alright, well choosing PU's for my tele seemed easy enough, but now I'm not sure what to do with this Les Paul. I was pretty much set on getting a Jazz for the neck and maybe a 59 or a Custom 5 for the bridge.

THEN I noticed the PATB-1 parallel axis trembucker™ original, and the PATB-3 parallel axis trembucker™ blues sarasceno pickups. These seem pretty interesting, although they are "recommended for all vibrato-equipped guitars". So why aren't these pickups recommended for hard-tail guitars? :help:

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

No problem, they seem to have a little more bass - and look weird in a stop-tailpiece guitar.

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

the parallel axis trembucker were designed from the ground up to fatten up tremolo guitars...they do not have standard polepieces and are not Gibson spaced, also I have a feeling they they might be WAY too much in a Les Paul.

You might have beed on the right track with the 59/jazz set...killer vintage style set with a better (less muddy) neck pickup. I am a big fan of the Alnico II stuff my Les Paul has a set of Antiquitys and I love them I also have a Gibson Moderne that has a set of Pearly Gates (also killer) and my Yamaha Santana model has a Custom Custom in the bridge and an Alnico II Pro in the neck...another great set. Do a search on the forum and read up on the Amnico II vs 5 and see what you think.

Good luck and welcome to the best forum on the web!

I'm TGWIF. I have the Jazz n '59 b in my Paul and it is a great combo!

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

I have a Pearly Gates/ C5 combo in my LP Std at the moment and it works very, very well for pretty much any rock tone. For a more traditional LP tone, a full set of Pearly Gates is tough to beat IMHO.

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

So what type of music do you play, and what type of sounds are you looking for?

I have a Custom and Jazz neck in my Paul.
To be honest, i'd like to get a neck pickup that has a little more output than the Jazz, but with a little less bass.

Get yourself a Pearly Gates. Less bass, more mids, plenty of sizzle. Best neck humbucker I've ever tried in a LP (or a Tele, or a Super Strat, or a Semi hollow, or a ... you get the idea).

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

Thanks guys, this input is just what I needed.

Ok, I'm glad the parallel axis monsters are out of the picture. I'll have to do some more listening to the pearly gates tonight, and read some more on the alnico II vs 5.

Is it true that the guy who invented fire immediately started smoking everything in sight?

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

Hello Mike
I've put a Jazz and CC on mine and i'm very Happy with this combo.
The Jazz is clean and define the CC has a2 so it's round and pretty thick.

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

If your looking for Blues Trembucker type of tone check into the Seth Lover's.
Awesome pickups!

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

ive got a fairly balanced sounding LP & i put 59n/CCin it and it totally rocks!plus the CC in split coil mode sounds very good i think.

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

PG neck is an awesome pup in an LP. Can't go wrong. Like a 59, just more in all the right places!

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

The Custom 5/59 is a great all around wide open rock tone, which sounds great clean or higher gain. The CC-59 is good if you want a very present big sounding Paul. And a Seth Set is the best for warm smokey blues on a midgain amp. Those are my favorite Duncan LP combos.

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

I would go with a pickup for the style of music you're going to use it for. If you use your Tele for blues, for example, yet once in a while play metal, set up the les paul for metal. It's really more of a practicality thing, but you can also set the Les Paul up for blues if you only play blues, etc.

Re: Need PU advice for a Les Paul

Thanks for all of the great info! I've decided on a jazz neck and a pearly gates bridge. All of the setups mentioned look really nice. But this one should work the best since my style is mostly "pearly jazz" anyway.
