I need your opinion SD experts . i had to part with Ibby AS200 , so i got in change surprisingly good 1995 Koren Aria Pro TA 80 Semi hollow ES335 type.
I've been playin' it for a couple of month now and decided to upgrade PUPs 'cos this guitar deserves better.

body is arched soft maple all around with Maple neck and Rosewood fretboard.
it's got very worm smooth tone with emphasized high mids which soft maple is known for. Tone it has is cross between semi hollow/ hollow body . i'm not sure what material sustain block is made of , its very soft , you can pinch peace of wood off by your finger nail easily. so back to the point., stock PUPS are OK but i think with better ones guitar could start breathing. PUPs are on a darker side as if tone is rolled off quite a bit. i hooked PUPs direct to output but result was same.
also i'm not sure its because of pick ups or the way guitar is glued so it sounds Hollow bodyish which i like but here is the thing... you need 4 times gain than lets say ES335 to get a even blues tone and when you manage to get that tone oh BOY is it muddy? its sound very muddy even Vol. on 10 Bridge or Neck. so i'm not sure its PUPs or guitar adds to that quality. its almost like tone on ES 175 if you crank gain up 'cos its a quality of fool hollow body guitars, muddiness.

I don't want very midly PUPs cos guitar has lots of it . i'm thinking low output
PAFs which would be Bright (not harsh)worm and smooth especially for N. as for B. pick up could be quite trebly but with lots body , ill work it with tone ( i miss a lot Super 58 B. which is quite trebly but with tone rolled off down to 3 it was swearing at me even on low gain SCO like).

nearly forgot , I do Jazz occasionally overdriven tone

I'M thinking '59'S or Antiquity but again i'm undecided , i never had SD's in any of my guitars , need your advise!

I'll appreciate it!

Id go with the 59 models or Seth Lover Models.

Re: need PUP suggestion for semi hollow/hollow

The correct answer to nearly ANY semi question is a set of 59's.

PG's is not a bad second choice for a little less bottom and more bite. A2P's if you want fatter highs and more bottom.

Seth's of course, the very mellow, very balanced, very classy answer.

Re: need PUP suggestion for semi hollow/hollow

I have Epi Dot which has all maple body with maple neck a rosewood fretboard (same as your Aria). I used '59 in the bridge but found it too bright. My Dot has Alnico II Pro (bridge) and '59 (neck) now.

Reading your description I guess Alnico II Pro isn't what you're looking for. I think you'll be happy with Pearly Gates (b) - '59 (n) or Pearly Gates set.

Re: need PUP suggestion for semi hollow/hollow

Fed my Epiphone BB King Lucille Pearly Gates neck and Brobucker bridge position humbuckers. It operates in Carlton/Scofield territory with a goodly dollop of Mick Taylor (ex-Rolling Stones) on the side.

I cannot remember how far up the Aria TA model range they change from screwed-on neck to glued-in? This will have a considerable bearing on both the sustain issue and the final tone of the upgraded instrument.

Re: need PUP suggestion for semi hollow/hollow

I have a Washburn WI67Pro semi-hollow that came stock with a '59n and a custom-custom bridge. Very resonent guitar. It was wired with a sort of spin-a-split setup....meaning you had a choice of parallel humbucks or single coil. I said this thing needs a proper hum setup with series wiring. So I changed it. The '59n became WAY too boomy no matter how far I lowered the pickup. The custom-custom became a big ball of mids with little definition. Couldn't get those pickups out of that guitar fast enough.
Put in a set of Dimarzio Virtual PAF's and it sounds beautiful. Woody, resonent and sweet. I guess the moral of the story is go with low-powered pickups because with all that resonence, hotter pickups will overwelm.

+1

This is what happened when I tried a Gibson Tony Iommi HB in my Epiphone. When I tried drop tuning, the guitar became one evil-sounding mofo.

At 10kOhms, the Brobucker is about as far as you can go without stepping outside ES Thinline territory. At high gain amp settings, even the BB is a bit of a wrestling match.

Re: need PUP suggestion for semi hollow/hollow

Start with 59's

More treble/less bass - PG's
Less treble/more bass - A2P
Even across the board - Seth

Re: need PUP suggestion for semi hollow/hollow

Thx you guys for your 2c . lot of information to consider. as for N. i'm becoming
more clear as most of you confirm 59.

I use lot of B. so i'm trying to make right choice. also understand you'll never know how finial choice of PUP will sound once they are drooped it in . there's lot of factors
involved to how its gonna sound. playing style , wood and so on but still trying
to narrow my choice down as much as possible .

elpie said said that he found 59 bridge way too trebly for his taste . i'm not afraid
of that factor as long as 59 N. has lots of body ? super58 B. is quite trebly
but has lots of balls when you roll off tone . here is example ( its SCO , super58 , tone rolled of quite a bit but it sound like its wide open , lots of guts.) http://www.purevolume.com/Voyager89009/albums/PUP+suggestioni

i think idea why good pup makers make B. trebly but BALLSY you have to use tone control and trebly pups become quite diverce.

Super 58's B an N are both unde 8K. 7.5K bridge i'm sure . i'm not after Hot pups however good they might be.

Funkfingers , My Aria is set Neck . with never ending sustain. its good . i'd never spend money on a guitar that deserves firePlace so i'm trying to maximize its potential.
