Need RC A5 magnets - without eBay

Hi
I cannot seem to find any place that sells a a good collection of guitar bar alnico magnets,
Except eBay. The last time I tried they could not set me up with my Pay Pal account.
It was a big mess and the guy got clearly agitated with me, for something I had no control over.
Basically looking for RC-A5's and UORC-A5's. Any store you know of I could call a human and just give
them my credit card?
Side bar: I want to order a WLH only custom color, and unpotted, but for almost three weeks all I get is MJ's or Derek's voice mail and email address. I have their ext. numbers. Anyone know what's up with that? The "help line" says I am in position 1 and I give up after 20 minutes, I've tried too many times to count, early and after lunch.
I have been taking a lot of forum space lately,
I am sorry for that, but I like Duncan pickups,
And you guys know a lot of real world knowledge that I do use.
Steve Buffington.

Try Philadelphia luthier. Mojotone.

As for the Custom shop. That seems to be their SOP in recent years. There are far too many great winders with excellent service out there these days. It's absolutely ridiculous to have to beg a business to sell you a product. I wouldn't.

Re: Need RC A5 magnets - without eBay

there are two or three people in the custom shop. thats it. if they are on the phone, they are not winding pups. when someone gets them on the phone, they have questions and want to talk about "their vision" of their new pups. i totally understand your frustration but these people are in very high demand and there are only so many hours in a day. i wont be surprised when the cs raises their prices due to the fact they are so busy and there are plenty of other winders charging more.

is calling them directly the proper way to go or are you supposed to call the main line and get directed to someone besides mj or derek? thats an honest question since i havent ordered a custom shop pup for years. though every pup ive gotten from them was great and i would happily do it again if i needed something

Re: Need RC A5 magnets - without eBay

Try calling them directly, and if you can't get a hold of them, I can try to see what I can figure out if you have specific questions. If you know exactly what you want, just put the order in, though.

First time MJ answered the phone, I had a fanboy geek-out moment. She shut me down quick with how busy she is and wanted to get to the business at hand. LOL!

Re: Need RC A5 magnets - without eBay

Thank you all,
I found a number with MJ's call through and she picked up.
I had a fanboy moment too. Got it ordered. Thanks. darthphineas - MojoTone had a phone # and i called and a person answered. Thank you.It has been a day of miracles for me
as a guitarist.
The Addiction FX still has no support number - just an e-mail and go to e-bay reference. But thank you for anyway.
All set. You guys are the best.

Yeah. They've had service all over the map through the years. When I was dealing with Hannah, things seemed fine. Maybe something short or something wrong, but she would follow up and make it right. Fell out of the mag swapping trend/fad a few years back, so I really don't bother with it any more.

Re: Need RC A5 magnets - without eBay

I order magnets online from Addiction FX.

Never needed to talk to anyone.

Why's that so important?

Re: Need RC A5 magnets - without eBay

Steve, dude, if you need some mags, PM me and I'll give you what I have. I can buy more from AddFX. I've had no problems ordering. I can get more. They're just a few bucks each.

Re: Need RC A5 magnets - without eBay

beubrummels,
Thanks for the offer!! Very nice of you.
Lewguitar,
When I go to AddFX I wind up on eBay, and twice I have tried to set up a purchase but I cannot get eBay to accept my Pay pal account, I have called, but like I said, they couldn't get it to work and quit trying after 10 minutes, told me to figure it out. I couldn't, that's why I need a human, like MoJoTone, whom I can just give my card to and he will send me what I want. I will try Philadelphia Luthiers tomorrow.
I know "0" about computers. So I cannot figure why pay pal and eBay don't work out for me. Makes me angry when they don't care, and won't be bothered to fix it.
I had a computer for optical business - lens math, cataract "slab off" calculations, lab ordering, but that's all, for 20 years. So my first desktop was 2009 or 2010. I am alone, completely, except for one or two musical gigs a year. So learning these things is incredibly impossible without help. I'm about 64 now. So computers are all a mystery.
All AddFX online had was e- mail your question to us. Under support there is no #.
Thanks.

Hi,
Thank you, ordered from MoJoTone over the phone. Will set up account withe Phil. Luth. A relative has no problem with eBay
So, is AddFX any better than the others? All the same "pretty much"? As long as they are fully magnitized?
MY LAST QUESTION ON THIS POST. I PROMISE.

Re: Need RC A5 magnets - without eBay

I cant recommend AFX. Problems with mags and service trying to get the mag issue taken care of (which I have documented elsewhere on this forum).

PL and Mojotone are great companies.

Glad you got your CS ordrer in. A fellow forumite and buddy of mine got no satisfaction with the Custom shop recently..you must have called on the right day.

Re: Need RC A5 magnets - without eBay

I've had no problems with AddictionFX. Everything I've ordered came quickly and worked perfectly. I've never spoken to anyone there. I just went to the website, filled out the order form and ordered what I knew I wanted and paid with PayPal.

I do wonder if the mag swapping fad came up and overwhelmed them a little. There were several rounds of problems that came up with them, from what I remember mentioned on the forum.

You have a good point, JeffB. Going to full-blown suppliers that provide for a ton of companies might be a better option for people to consider.

I can't speak to better, but I ordered "the kitchen sink" recently and everything came in quickly and correct. AddFX only has two choices for magnetizing, either they magnetize them (fully) or they don't magnetize them at all. (Meaning you would have to charge them yourself if you want a lower/demagnetized bar.)

Well... different vendor get their mags from different foundries, but all share the same five.

So, it's a matter of getting the "right" Alnico grade available from the "right" vendor at that time they have it in stock.

To my ears, AddFX stocks the arguably "best" sounding long and short roughcast A4s and roughcast UOA5s, excellent-sounding roughcast A8s and average-sounding polished A2s and A3s.

I source my long and short sandcast A2s and A3s from a local foundry that also supplies Marelli Magnets for F1. They really sound like early '50s mags, although they don't look as vintage as the ones from AddFX.

HTH,

Re: Need RC A5 magnets - without eBay

Thanks All,
Great information and I used it. I went to MoJoTone, got a couple RCA5's and a couple "cast" UOA5's. I doubt the UOA5's
are roughcast, but not sure if that matters in an unoriented A5.
My Brother in law has an eBay account which he has no problems with. I will try both out in my Seth Lover bridge p'ups.
Meaning RCA5 & UOA5, and compare them to AFX, see if I can tell a big difference. If I just "think" one "might" sound better than the other (Mojo/AFX) then I'm done. Might and close is good enough for me. Time to settle on everything for my 3 stage guitars, as I have an actual gig at a Blues Fest (it is big in my town) so my once or twice a year gig is coming up, and get down to getting my chops back with re-newed inspiration from Peter Green, which I missed in the late 60's.
Probably laughable to some, but with my age and health, it is a huge deal for me.
Thank God I am still as pretty as a girl and my bigger waistline doesn't really show with clothes on.
I have taken much of your time on many posts lately, thanks for putting up with that.
Appreciate your patience,
Steve Buffington
