Need recommendations for acoustic amp

My pop recently inherited my Celebrity acoustic and mentioned that he wants an acoustic amp to go with it so he can compete with electric bass etc if he plays out with friends. My new epiphone AJ 15 doesn't have a pickup and that's just fine with me.

The celebrity has a really cheap peizo transducer and it sounds really brittle and harsh with poor bass response. What kind of acoustic amp would compensate for this well enough and give him 15-30 watts of output. Cheaper is better in this case and no need for distortion etc. Just need a cheap amp that sounds good enough and compensates well for a bad peizo pickup in the bridge.

Marshall has a really cool acoustic amp, but I forgot what it's called. My main reservation with acoustic amps is that they frequently are loaded with built-in effects, which I don't like. I don't play much acoustic, but I like how my bass combo amp is stripped-down, with regards to features, and bass amps usually have a wider frequency response than acoustic and keyboard amps. The difference is not too noticeable, so it is sensible to consider any acoustic, keyboard, or bass amps to amplify an acoustic guitar. The characteristics I would seek for myself would include and easily-portable solid state combo with no built-in effects and no distortion. Roland and Carvin also have interesting amps.

Most acoustic amps IMHO don't have enough power. A 100W acoustic amp will never be able to keep up with a 25W electric guitar amp. That being said, if he is looking to jam with some guys and there is a good PA a decent mike is all he will really need. A PA has more power and a lot more versatility than any acoustic amp does, espicially if you plan on using the amp for vocals too. A lot of the new acoustic amps have a channel for vocals as well as one for instruments, but the speakers really can't handle the vocals and the instruments the sane way. Somewhere something has to suffer and its usually the vocals. Think about it.... most acoustic recordings are done with a mike, not an amp. The Fishman loudbox will run somwhere between 400 to 1000$ depending on which one you are looking at. If the club has a good pa he should invest in a good instrument mike like the AKG C-430 small condenser mics. This is a mike that is made for drums, but sounds a lot better than a SUre SM57 or 58 and they are pretty reasonable. The Mike a cable guitar............. your done! and the sound will generally be better than most amps!

I've been playing that through a cheapy crate 30 watt and like it just fine. Active tones on it help a lot.

edit: Yeap... After my long research about a year ago, I remember that this one was my second choice for an acoustic amp (after the fender acoustasonic). I never got any of them though....
