Re: need some carvin opinions

When I think of Carvin, I think of shred and 80s metal as well as modern metal. Sure they can probably do tones similar to the three players you mentioned, but I would look more towards a Marshall of some sort. Possibly look at Carvins more vintage voiced amps like the Belaire.

Re: need some carvin opinions

Bluesguyj might be right. I have honestly never tried a carvin amp, only their guitars (which I love) but I'm pretty sure the v3 could cover those classic tones well. I've heard it's voiced closer to a marshall than aything else, but with more gain on tap. See if you can find one used at a store and try it out, that's always the best way imo.

Re: need some carvin opinions

well besides carcvin ,im also checking out mesa they are just so damn expensive and i do like the road king.

Re: need some carvin opinions

and the marshall that i tried at guitar center was the jcm 2000 and thats a lot of amp but its also a lot of money.

Re: need some carvin opinions

I've been really impressed w/thier Vintage series, and from what I've heard of the V3 it sounds just as good.

Go to Youtube and type in Carvin as a search, they have a few Vintage and V3 owners make thier own demo vids...they sound very good.

Check it out.

I have a Road King and love it, but if I was going for the tones you mentioned, I would get a Stiletto if Mesa is the manufacturer of choice. The Road King is just a fancy Dual Rec with some extra flavors and features, its not really very Marshall flavored, even with EL34 engaged.

Re: need some carvin opinions

I would personally stay away from Mesa. Marshall voiced amps (Carvin) and Mesas are 2 completely different beasts.

If you are looking at more of the Marshall flavor, I think the Stilleto runs on EL34s...? Its a good sounding amp and can get some good british tones and isnt like the traditional Mesa sound IMO.

The V3 is a pretty killer amp, definitely a lot of cool features on that sucker.

Re: need some carvin opinions

Since you mentioned mesa, have you tried any of the express models? I tried an express 5:50 combo the other day and was really impressed. That thing sounded great and was able to do several tones well. The only reason I didn't buy it is b/c I tried an orange out the next day and fell in love, plus I got the orange for $300 cheaper, win win baby!

Re: need some carvin opinions

Carvin values depreciate quickly. You have a lot of money to buy a great amp, that will both be reliable and will hold its value. I personally have not plugged into a Carvin that I have liked. I owned an X100b, tried a Legacy and a friend owned a Bel Aire ( I think that is the name) I just don't find them inspiring.

If you are after 70s flavor, a Carvin will not get you anywhere near. You need a non master volume amp, ran wide open. For 1800.00 you could get a lot a great, vintage amps, with build qualities that Carvin cannot touch. You could also shoot Scott F a note and have him build your dream machine.... Perhaps he could whip up a Laney Supergroup//// Then you are talking tone, and lots of it!!

One of the other guys on here had his Legacy catch fire & melt...

Should be an interesting thread if you can search for it!

Carvin = krap.

my experience with carvin amps has been that they're not reliable. back in the early 90's i had one of their solid state sx series that crapped out on me. a few years later i took a chance on their mts series...same deal. kept crapping out. sent it to them for repair, got it back saying they found nothing wrong with it. uhg!! BTW- the legacy is nothing but an mts amp w/el34's in it, along with (chinese made) celestion vintage 30's. i actually got one of their sales reps to reluctantly admit that this is true. and they run HOT!!! also, i have their acoustic amp- the green one, ag100d. gues what? that one died too just past the warranty period. with a little pleading, i got them to send me a new one. this one has been fine, but definately built very, very cheaply. buy at your own risk. if you don't need a gazillion channels, i'd recomend instead looking for a used fender prosonic. it has the great fender clean that you'd expect, plus mesa-like gain , or anything in between. you can find these used for around 600, and they're built to last. after all, they were designed in the custom shop when bruce zinky was w/fender. good luck, but if you go w/carvin you're definately rolling the dice.

that was just one guy..go to the carvin forum and you will find some really helpful information and sound clips..

and dude, don't say something is crap just because....never mind...I have never played a carvin so I can't say anything. However, I am going to the Carvin factory in two weeks!

I'm ONLY speaking of my own experiences with Carvin gear...

Guitar & bass amps, power amps, mixing consoles...

All krap.

I've had many, MANY less then steller 'events' with their stuff... many resulting in smoke & fire.

The guitars I've played have all been rather lifeless & sterlie too...but I don't like Jacksons or Ivebeenhads all that much either...

Probably not fair to comment on those.

But the electronics???

Hope 'ya got a fireproof suit!

Peace.

OK, make that two guys.

Every piece of Carvin gear I've owned failed prematurely. These pieces of gear include loudspeakers, power amps, guitar amp, mixer, and bass amp. In addition I've had several friends all blow up their Carvin stuff. Most of the time smoke and or fire is part of the equation.

The guitars and basses play like butter but in my opinion are lacking something in tone. Maybe it's just the lousy pickups.

Re: need some carvin opinions

cheaper Mesas like the express models are a much better choice than carvins. you could get an orange tiny terror and cab? that'll get you some nice old British flavor!

dont get suckered into buying some massive head and cab just cuz you can afford it. if you can get a high quality head or combo for roughly the same price you'll love yourself forever.
