Need some help! Double coil split

Nem

i ordered some Alnico 2 Pro's the other day and when i get them im wanting to do a double coil split with them

i have a 3 way pickup selector, when its in position 1, i want it to activate the neck pickup, when in posiiton 3 it activates the bridge pickup, but in position 2 (central) I want it to activate only the INNER coils of each pickup which is effectively coil splitting but with both pickups at the same time

I know john petrucci does this with a 3 way toggle switch (i have a 3 way blade but that shudnt matter) so it should work

anyone know how I can accomplish this? cos i cant find any wiring diagrams for this

thanks

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

hmm well its on a Jackson SLSMG, its a 3 way blade switch...does that help? ill see if i can take some photos of it

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

here, i took some pictures but theyre not very good, hopefully you be able to get from them what you need :)

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

The good news is, it looks like there's enough unused terminals on that switch that you could do what you want.

The bad news is, I'm not familiar with that specific switch to tell you how exactly.

If there's any way to get a manufacturer, or part number off that switch, that may help. In the mean time, I'll see what I can find out. :)

I was just looking that guitar over on Jacksons website. It sure is a nice looking guitar. Very clean design. Unfortunately, Jackson doesn't seem to offer any tech support - not even an email address to contact them with.
Thats sorta odd.

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

the thing is the wires you see in those pictures are from EMGs, so when I put in the duncans all of those wires will be gone, not sure if that changes anything

and ill try and find a part number or sumthing but theres no point in even emailing Jackson, they never reply to emails :(

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

Keep this in mind, if you changed the vol or tone to a push/pull pot, you could have the "split" option whenever you wanted. Change both the vol and tone to push/pull pots, and you gain complete control. ;)

You know, the more I look at that guitar, the more I like it.
How does it play and feel?

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

lol u know im scared enough as it is just thinking about changing the pickups and wiring up this double split thing, i dont need to be frightened anymore by the replacement of my knobs :p

would it help if I told you exactly how many terminals there are and stuff like that?

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

It'll help, but it probably won't help enough. If you could get a few close-up pics that were crystal-clear, that would also help a lot.

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

ok, ill have to whip out the ol digital camera then :)

what type of things are you looking for in the pic? cos im not sure what angles to take pics from cos i dunno what would help and stuff

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

From your first pics, it looks as though the switch might be built using a small perf-board, or circuit board, with "wipers" on it. Kinda like an Ibanez switch, or sorta like this:

Yours, of course, is a different shape. So, if you can some shots that show the little board layout, and where the wires attach, that would help. Try to get a few different angles, and use some bright lights. But not too bright.

The ideal solution, of course, would be if you could use a meter to measure each terminal in each switch position. That would take some more work, but it would answer the question. ;)

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

On another note the JP model that IBZ had used a 4PDT on/on/on toggle switch for a pup selector. However I thought the inside positions were in series, maybe not, I don't really remember. You can find the schematic of that on Ibanez's site under *support ... guitar wiring diagrams* ... look up the JPM 100 or such.

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

ok ill upload some pics of the switch later tonight, but you cant see much of the circuit board because its blocked by the switch casing

i took a look at the JPM100 and yeah it does use a 4PDT but obviously i dont have one of them and i dont really want to have to replace the switch (i cant use toggle switches in my guitar anyway without drilling another hole...which im not gunna do :p), so im kinda hoping theres a way around it without the 4PDT

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

ok, i think ive found something but im not sure if its what i need :(

i was looking around for a way to wire it up like the JPM but without the 4PDT, so this is what I found:

http://www.projectguitar.com/ref/jpmwire.htm

thats pretty much what i want the pickups to do, but im not sure if that switch is like the one I have?

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

Ok Nem; of all those, its only the one called switch3 thats really useful, but I think thats good enough to figure this out.

Let me think on this a bit and do some research.

BTW - what you want to do is actually real simple. Its figuring out exactly how that switch works thats tricky. ;)

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

ok thanks ArtieToo! I emailed SD about it the other day but no reply as of yet, so if i ever get a reply I'll see if they come up with the same as you :)

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

Ok . . . I just got your switch figured out. It was simple. :)

Give me a couple minutes, and I'll have a diagram. ;)

Well, it may take more than a few minutes, but here's basically how your switch works. Compare my drawing and its labels, to the labels I put on your switch pic:

...ok....
i can see that the diagram is a representation of the photo (how its wired atm) but i dont get how it shows how i wire it up to get the double coil split?

Re: Need some help! Double coil split

i dont think he posted the split pic yet..... but its too bad you just dont use to push pull pots.... it would not only give you the opportunity for splits in the middle..... but splits in any place you want, and the combo of the 2 buckers in the middle position also....eh...
