Need Some Help

I'm having a guitar custom built and the luthier just asked me if I wanted to mod the Blackouts for 18v. I can't find the topic using the "search" function.

Safe? Not safe? Recommend? Not recommended?

Multi-scale 7 intended for modern Ola- Merrow- Hauch esk metal.

Thanks

Re: Need Some Help

If I remember correctly, the ahb series blackouts were designed to have enough headroom at 9-volts such that you wouldn't hear a difference at 18-volts like you would with, say, an EMG 81. I have read that 18-volts won't hurt the blackouts, but I am not an authority on this. I personally have had my main set (accidentally) on an 18-volt equipped guitar for a short amount of time and it didn't seem to hurt anything, but I wouldn't recommend it, especially if they don't need it..

Along those lines, I did buy a set of AHB-1s a few years ago that had extremely low output (like non-functional level, points to internal preamp issue) and SD tech support said they were unfixable (due to the epoxy backside), so if the internal preamp goes on them the pu's are useless.. It took me 4 months to put them in the guitar so I was stuck with them, I learned a few lessons on that one.. So, now that I put 2 and 2 together, I definitely don't think the risk is worth it..

Here's another SD forum thread that recaps this issue:

Good luck!
