Need some new cables for a new setup.....

Need some new cables for a new setup. I was going to continue on with Monster but they have discontinued the old Monster Rock Line and the new ones don't have smaller lengths available (only 12' and 21'). Instead their new lower end Performer 600 Series offers the smaller lengths. Doesn't make much sense to me but whatever. I'm contemplating getting a new Monster Rock 12' and filling in the gaps with the lower end Performer 600 Series or possibly going with a different cable brand. I have also been looking at Mogami as well. I know alot of people knock on Monster but FWIW I have had a couple for 12 years and never had a single issue. I have never compared Monsters to anything though. Just curious of forum members thoughts....

I have also read that the connectors on the monster cables are thicker than normal and have been known to wear jack slots faster. Anyone know if theres truth to that?

Re: Need some new cables for a new setup.....

I switched from Bill Lawrence to Mogami.

Bill Lawrence is a great solderless solution, but its low cap... its going to mean a hotter, brighter signal gets to your amp. (To my ears)

Also it does not seem to work with a Tele for me. A Strat was better, but my ears got adjusted to the Mogami cable. I also have some old Whirlwind cables - I like those a lot.

Not hotter but yes more treble will make it to your amp without being rolled off. For me thats always a plus but some for some people (Stevie Ray Vaughn was one) won't like the brightness and liked cables with higher capacitance that rolled off the high end.

Re: Need some new cables for a new setup.....

We're kind of saying the same thing - its a passive system so you really can only roll off. Rolled off highs to me is perceived as a little less output makes it to the amp.

It is what it is - I typically stick with single coils so I like Mogami. Don't get me wrong - the BillL sounds OK with a Strat, its a Tele I don't like using that cable.

And the BillL plugs to me are light years ahead of GeorgeL, really well thought out. I'd love it if they were offered in a size that worked with Mogami.

Re: Need some new cables for a new setup.....

I have used George L's for years
they are the standard by which I measure everything else

what I have found is
in short runs across a pedal board the L's are fine

over a 20' instrument length
I find the $5 Musicians Gear braided cable
to be a bit warmer and more pleasant for my ears here at home
the $25 Carvin Braided cable, of the same length, is almost identical to the
less expensive one

my buddy uses the molded Live wire angled shorties for his pedal board
he likes them

I once had a noisey George L
took it apart and cut off 1/2 inch
remade the end
back to being a fine cable

but I agree the George L's may be seen as bright

I used Monster Rock cables for years, but lately I've become a fan of making my own cables from Mogami 2524 and Neutrik plugs. The Mogami seems to sound natural, whereas Monster definitely has a hyped high-end in my experience.

Never been able to stand George L's. Compared to Monster or Mogami, they seem to roll off a ton of lows and lower mids resulting in a thin and nasal tone.

Re: Need some new cables for a new setup.....

The Planet Waves American Stage cables are pretty great all across the board but pricey . I use the Planet Waves Classic Series shorter cables for pedalboards and have yet to have an issue with one of them . 6" , 1' and 3' . I just wait for a cable sale on Musicians Friend to buy one of their cable kits , solderless easy to put together , sometimes they will go out but you just have to trim the end off and put back together easy fix.

Re: Need some new cables for a new setup.....

monster cable don't make the real sound : more bass and other things
i use an Elixir guitar cable and the low capacitance is very very good
a fat cable

Re: Need some new cables for a new setup.....

Due to the ridiculous lengths Monster Cable goes to protect their trademark I simply refuse to do any business with them.

Re: Need some new cables for a new setup.....

I use George L's on both my boards as well as connecting them to guitar and amps. I use the .155 for connecting pedals & the .225 for connecting the board to the guitar and amp. I've been using these cables now foe about 10+ years and never had any major problems. Every once in a blue moon one of the connectors loosens up & I get some static, but once I tighten it back up its fixed.

Re: Need some new cables for a new setup.....

I've started using spectraflex standard series cables for my long leads, and Armor Gold pedal jumpers. I really like them all so far. Btw thanks to all those who gave recommendations in my thread a while back. I appreciate the input.
