Need some serious pickup/guitar combo tone advice

Hopefully some of you tone fanatics (in a good way) can chime in on this...

I play in a hardcore/metal style band and play in Drop C#. The type of tone I'm looking for is something that is punchy, and articulate for rhythms (Chugga Chugga stuff), but then can turn around Do leads.

I have...an Ibanez RG350 which has a Basswood Body; It currently has a Screaming Demon SH-12 in the Bridge. Infact, I think i'm in love with the tone, however, I play in drop C# and the Demon has trouble tracking the lower strings-- so its somewhat muddy. It would be perfect if there was a pickup with a similar voicing to the Demon, could track detuned guitars and had more output and a little more punch.

I also just got an Ibanez SZ520 Which has a Mahogany Body. I recently bought and installed (by a tech) a Duncan distortion SH-6 into the bridge. To me, it sounds nice and thick-- it definitely cuts through the mix. I have two problems though... Surprisingly-- my Demon in the RG sounds "punchier"-- there is more "oohhmmp" to it. Don't get me wrong, the DD has a TON MORE output than the Demon-- and sounds pretty crunchy, but to me there is no Punch; it has all that output but doesn't do anything with it. The second issue is that the DD is messier than the Demon, its not horrible, but I'm not impressed by the clarity. There is simply way too much mid-range, so naturally just isn't clear.

I have a spare TB-4 but I'm not sure its going to have the tone that I want.

For the moment, I'm am switching the pickups: I'm putting the DD in the RG, and the Demon into the SZ. (I'm make a post tomorrow as to how it sounds).

Anyways my question is, Does anyone know which pickup would be best for the type of tone I'm looking for, for my RG and SZ respectively?

Btw, I use an Engl Powerball.

Welcome Abomb! I'm not a drp-tune Ibanez guy. But someone out here is...Patience and the answer will come. This sounds like an easy answer for for more than a few guys out here.

Full Shred.

Re: Need some serious pickup/guitar combo tone advice

I would just like to note...I mainly posted this because of the SZ (The RG has room for improvement, but I'm happy with it)...

I just got the SZ last Thursday, and it could be that I simply don't like "Les Paul Style" guitars (that is for the type of music my band plays-- its a great guitar for pretty much anything else at the moment).

It also could just be the duncan distortion doesn't pair well with the SZ... or it could just be bad...

Anyways, If I don't like the DD with my RG-- then I'm going to be exersizing the return policy.

Put all 6 hex screws of the Demon under the bass string & use the fillisters for the treble strings. This will fatten up the highs & tighten the lows.

As for the SZ, I think you might like the Custom, though, with its shorter scale, it might sound garbled when dropped so low.

The SZ is going to be sold...

I swapped the pickups between the guitars (The Demon is in the SZ, and the DD is in the RG)....and the Distortion sounds A HELL of a lot better in the RG (albiet, the DD is a bit too compressed for use with my Engl Powerball...). Infact both the Demon and the DD sound better in the RG and worse in the SZ.

I think I'll switch back to the demon and try the mod Benjy suggested.

I'm just not digging the tones from the SZ at all... its definitely being sold... I'll try to grab a New RG or even an S series Ibanez instead.

Re: Need some serious pickup/guitar combo tone advice

Before you go selling anything or spending money on more pickups, have you given any thought to your strings? When you drop tune, you're often asking your strings to produce tones beyond their useful range. For instance, if you're using a set that's .009 through .042, dropping three semitones to C# will turn your E, A, and D strings into toneless mush. If your guitars are always drop-tuned to C#, try switching to strings which start at .0010 and are "light top/heavy bottom". I GUARANTEE that you'll floored by the improvement in your sound.
