I am looking for an EL84 and or a 12ax7, at7, au7 etc etc
Really want to try some different things out in my valve junior. Doesnt need to have much life left, just want to see what I can get tone wise. Would love for them to have later breakup, for a little more cleans, but at the same time would love to have some with more breakup. I am thinking of putting EL84 with more breakup in with 12a-7 with less, EL84 with less, 12a-7 with more, both with less, both with more.
In other words I am wanting to experiment to see what I can get this to do. I like the tone overall, esp since I put the Hammond OT in.
So if you have some decent tubes that will fit in these 2 sockets let me know. Need to be inexpensive.

i've got an EL84 left over from my old JR. cant remember if its the stock sovtek it came with or the JJ i got later

I sort of have the same request but for my Pignose G40V. I will start a new thread as I don't want to hijack. If I had an EL84 amp I'd have some power tubes for you to try, but mine are all 6L6's.

Sorry I don't have one for ya, but a 5751 preamp tube is highly recommended.

From the tubedepot website:

With 30% less amplification than a 12AX7, but 100% interchangeable, an amp using the 5751 preamp tube creates a creamier and smoother tone than with a 12AX7. If your amp has too much gain, the 5751 is the perfect choice to "calm" the amp down and get more break-up without all the volume. We prefer the U.S. made JAN 5751 over any other 5751 available."

Is the 5751 a 12ax7 or a different beast entirely? Would it compare closer to a 12at7?

I found the preamp tube gain factors listed here:

5751=70
12at7=60
12ay7=45
12av7=40 (never knew there was such a beast as a 12av7)
12au7=20

Keep in mind that I'm near the bottom of the totem-pole for tube experience, but I believe a 5751 is a lower-gain, more rugged, mil-spec version of the 12ax7. I've never used it. Thats what I read . . . I think.

Maybe Lew or someone can comment further.

I am new to tube experience myself and I like to experiment. Lots of variables as to which position to place the lower gained pre amp tube. Some sites say socket 1 others say the tube inverter slot. I won't know till I try.

I guess tubes are the amp equivilent to guitar pickups... Just what I need, another new obsession lol.

Gonna try that 5751. Would still like to try some of the other 12a-7 variants
Aren't there lower and higher gain EL84 or variants ?

Yes I know at least with 12ax7s there are variations of hot or mild ones.
