Need Speaker Recommendations

I am in search of Joe Satriani style tone. I run a wet/dry rig in my home recording studio. The speaker cab is isolated in another room and I keep it miced and listen to everything through the monitors. This way I know exactly how it will sound recorded.

The amp I use is a Peavey XXX, which is a peavey ultra, which is very close to the JSX satriani amp.

I use Fred and Norton Pickups with high gain.

The problem is that the speakers Ive used have a smooth or subdued top end. I am looking for a speaker with a gritty top end. The V30 sounded like it was very narrow, missing so much of the upper registers. The stock XXX speaker is much more open, but is smooth on top.

I would try a greenback, but I record with a 1x12 and the amp has too much juice. dont diss the 1x12 for recording .. . the mics think it is huge!

Anyone recommend a speaker with a searing top end and tight bass? I take most of the bass out, proximity effect seems to add it back.

Re: Need Speaker Recommendations

Reading your post, it made me wonder if you have ruled out the capacitive effects of a long speaker cable. Secondly, your isolation box; could it be too "dead"? Also, it would be helpful for others if you identify the speaker you currently use as a point of reference.

Speaker cable is 10' long. I have listed the speakers I have used. It sounds great now, just too smooth on top.

Maybe a G12H-30 it has more bass and treble then say a greenback but is tighter in the bass then a greenback. Still quite vintage sounding and only 30watts and I assume the amp is at least 50 watts. As you go up in wattage from what I've read speakers get smoother as in higher wattage speakers are smoother.

Re: Need Speaker Recommendations

Does Peavey sell the JSX speakers separately?

I was gonna suggest a G12T75 as well... maybe a Classic Lead 80 would work too?

Good idea! I just ordered a Peavey JSX speaker through Guitar Center. It was a special order that I had to pay upfront, and was $87.

If that doesnt work, I will try an Eminence Red White and Blue, a Private Jack, or a Screaming Eagle.
